Let me ask you guys this. after seeing some of the comments of guys seeing hardly anything, why do you continue to do it year after year? Is it because we as hunters get set in our ways we don't like change, no matter how shitty the hunting is? I've thought the same thing Mo. I see all the posts of habitat things getting done and then the complaints about winter kill, wolves, crappy neighbors, and a crappy DNR. I wonder at what point I would have called it quits and shifted to something else? I've been a bowhunter since I was 14 and see no reason to ever change that, but I also use to hunt Prairie Chickens and Quail a lot. Now I don't even own a bird-dog because those numbers dropped so much that I don't even feel good about shooting them when I do see them. I get it though, you do what you love to do and measure results accordingly. If disease or something whipped out my deer herd I would probably still keep chugging along.

The deer landscape in every state is ever changing. What we have today will not be what we have in the future. I used to hunt MN for meat, and then go to WI EXPECTING to shoot a good buck, and did most years. It really was a big buck factory over there for many years. With obtaining my MN property, neighborhood changes in WI, and the WI DNR beating the shit out of the herd in the area that we hunt over there, that has completely flip flopped. My family will eat 2-3 deer a year and look forward to putting venison in the freezer every year. With me and my two boys hunting several places each year, it really is not a problem to obtain that most years. If it doesn't happen, it really is no skin off my nuts. Unlike most here, MN is my respite from deer hunting chaos now, and gives us the best chance at shooting nicer bucks.

Antlers appeal to me for two reasons, the challenge, and every buck has a different rack. To hunt does is kind of boring, they all look the same. How many doe heads are in a bar/man cave.
Nothing wrong with a hunter taking the challenge to shoot a big buck. One of MN big problems is they will not let fish or animals grow up to adults. We have the highest ratio of young bucks shot in the Midwest, many fisherman on my lake keep 12-13 inch walleyes??

Is it because we as hunters get set in our ways we don't like change, no matter how shitty the hunting is? I wondered where this went. Glad it came back up, because I sat on this for a few days. One simple answer: Creation I sat through the bad years. Went militant on doe protection and am still feeling the effects of that. It led to us not shooting does this year when we could have probably taken 3-4 yearling doe and been fine, but we didn't communicate. Lots of venison left in the woods that I'm now concerned about lasting the winter if the weather gets bad. All that aside, we've crawled back outta that hole. I really think the DNR has done us a huge favor with their CWD tainted meat boogey woogey. The guys next door I don't think even shot a deer this year. Their camp looked unoccupied most of rifle season. Ok, creation. I did an inventory of all the things I enjoy about it. Working the land, seeing things grow, seeing them eaten, seeing deer respond favorably, seeing deer, friends, campfires, getting out of the city, mushroom hunting, grouse, that look on the kids' faces, and the excitement of pushing the envelope even further next year. And don't forget the little shot of dopamine from getting some feedback on the ole' forum when shit goes right.

Maybe they'll ease up on shooting so many damn deer

Yep, I remember reading that awhile ago. To be honest, that study has made it really easy for me to not shoot deer. If I was still living where I used to live, I wouldn't eat any venison (mine or anybody else's) without knowing it tested negative. Once CWD spreads in MN like it has in WI...I won't be eating MN venison without that same negative test result.

It's already Intensive here. What are they gonna do...invent "Intensive plus"? Early antlerless is probably on the way soon.

I saw more than that, maybe 8-10. Of course, at least half of those were likely repeats....so 4-5 is pretty close. I think Bob saw a few and his brother saw zero. The deer are thick around here I tell ya
