Canned venison stroganoff. I thought we were out but Mrs Kooch found a jar in her parents house and snagged it. Now I think it’s official. There’s no venison left around here. It feels weird. Next season I’ll make more of an effort. My wife used to make that with venison and one year we had bear meat. It was great.

Definitely not good eats, but we had a prepackaged pork roast that smells and tastes like boar pig. My wife didn’t notice it. Does anyone else occasionally get this? I also had some boar bacon last summer and I haven’t eaten any home cooked bacon since, except for venison bacon. I did have a bacon cheeseburger or two at a bar and grill. From different stores and it still happens. I think it was the Trooper that told me some people have a genetic thing with uncut boars and how they taste bad. I don’t have it because I’ve eaten a wild boar and thought it was great. Some people can’t eat it.

In the mountains with my brother in law and we were elk hunting. I stopped and pointed to my nose. He looked at me with a blank look on his face. Two more steps and the elk exploded. I can also smell ketosis in cattle which is a metabolic condition. That came in useful in veterinary practice. The smell is in their urine, breath, and manure. There are also various tests, but I had faith in my nose over some of the tests. If I ate grapefruit within a short period, I could not smell ketosis.

Just swung by Dudleys Syrup. Its a few blocks as the crow flies from our house. Never knew it existed till a friend told me last year. Took Ivy for her daily UTV ride and saw a bunch of vehicle back in the woods, so I swung in. They are doing their first boil of the year tonight. He has 470 trees tapped in the bottom lands of the St Francis river. His biggest output was over 10,000 gallons one spring. There were 5 guys and the wives in there working on stuff, and moving fast. Absolutely amazing the network of tubes tieing all the trees together and a vacuum pump up to a shed with a holding and seperating tank. They seperate some water before its transfeered to another shed with a boiler thats about 8 ft long and 3 or 4 ft wide. Cant wait to go back and go for a tour. www.facebook.com/dudleyssyrupco/

Got back Wednesday from a week in Florida. Horrible at getting pics but enjoyed some sort of seafood daily. Had Chilean sea bass and scallops from a local seafood place that we cooked at home. Both were outstanding. Blackened grouper tacos at The Lighthouse Grille on the water. Oysters on the half shell there too. They were huge! Lobster roll at the Lock ‘N Key. Really good. Lots of meat. Ate at Farlows on the Water for my bday dinner Tuesday night. Had their house specialty seafood pie with coconut risotto and fries. Seafood pie was a puff pastry stuffed with shrimp, scallops, and lobster. No shortage of either. With a rich cream sauce. Stole this photo from yelp (next page).
