Cedars are my favorite tree type to put a stand in if they are big enough to hold a stand. I prefer strap on stands since they are easier to hide in the tree, but ladder stands would work too.
Crush up some of the cedar berries and greenery for a great cover scent

Anyone have ladder stands in cedars? Used to put ladder stands in cedars. Worked well.

There are two wooden ladder stands in these fence line cedars. Deer sign to the west of the first ladder stand.

We have 2 stands in Cedars in Iowa. Looking to add more. They allow great concealment.

How far from apples or crabapples if planting for cover? Is 450 yards enough to plant without concern?

How far from apples or crabapples if planting for cover? Is 450 yards enough to plant without concern? I’m not sure Kooch. I don’t have any red cedar here. Just white. I’d say that’s as good a distance that one could hope for. Do you know what varieties you have planted? There’s a lot out there that are CAR resistant.

I have no idea what varieties. I’m betting he does not either.

How far from apples or crabapples if planting for cover? Is 450 yards enough to plant without concern? When I was researching CAR I looked at info from OSU and K-State (just to be local). With our strong south winds most say you need to be at least a mile to the north with your apple trees. If you're planting apples north of cedars you can get away with a quarter mile. We are never more than a 100yds from a cedar here so I just make sure to buy car resistant varieties.

Maybe I'll just plant Spruce and not worry about it. They grow well there.

If I had the option of 2 trees that ultimately had the same results, but one possibility was an issue down the road... I'll cross it off the list.

I haven't been through northern MN for years, so maybe my memory isn't great...but I don't recall seeing red cedars up there.
I'd plant spruce

Spruce up north ... in my opinion. I have many natural cedars in Iowa. Some are very good sized, perfect for stands.

Over there I doubt you could escape red cedars if you wanted. As an apple guy, I still wouldn't plant any. I kill every one I find here.

For cover in your area of SD, red cedar would be as good as anything!
