I was able to find 8 chestnuts today on a couple trees and on the ground below the trees. All still have the spiny husk on them. I want to plant them in a couple months in pots, what should I do with them for now?

I want to plant them in a couple months in pots, what should I do with them for now? 1 - Soak in a cup of water overnight. Hopefully they don't float. 2 - Put in ziplock bag with a damp paper towel. Leave ziplock partly open. 3 - Store in crisper of your fridge until ready to plant. If they dehydrate or get moldy they may not germinate.

Dam things are sharp.

I hear pliers and leather gloves are handy... 4 - don't let your wife throw out all your seed the next time she cleans the fridge.

JohnMake sure they got pollinated. Spiny husks should be split open an nuts pop out easy if they did. They will Be dark brown an full. If nuts are shriveled up they lack pollination and are good for nothing.

I'm guessing any that have been on the ground for a few months and not eaten would not be full. The critters and deer would e gotten them. Take a few photos of the nuts and we will be able to tell. How about posting up your annual photos of them as well? They must've taken a good leap in growth this year.

Even those that will open doesn't mean all of them inside are good. This was my first year for any and many had 3 nuts in each, but only one that I assumed to be good. It will be interesting to see the deer try to eat them at some point. Getting them out of those husk sucks.

I think I thought about picking them way to late. out of 8 spiny things only got 3 nuts, all floated the next day when put in water.

Checked my two trees, no signs of life yet.
They did not seem to look dead, so maybe just haven't woke up yet.
Edit: just read back in this thread. It was May 7th when I saw a bud in the trees last year. That gives me more hope that they are still dormant.

I've had some spring dieback a couple times where they leafed and then we had s freeze in May. I checked some a planted in tubes 4 years ago from seed. 4 of 10 are 7-8'. They received no maintenance from me so only the strong have survived. The others died or are under 2'. I'm going to cage the new ones I plant

Mine have not woken up yet, but those I see selling in stores are in full leaf right now.....not sure where those at the stores are coming from, but it's someplace a hell of a lot warmer than here, or from inside a greenhouse somewhere!
I have to see if my Chestnut "stick" survives this year. Over the fall/winter I assume a buck attacked the cage one on my chestnuts was in. Once the cage was removed the tree was eaten and rubbed and mauled down to a stick. I'm hopeful, but doubtful all at the same time.

The chestnut blight would kill the tops of trees but, they'd root sprout and grow again until they got hit with the blight again. Those leafed chestnuts are are most likely from Chestnut Hill in Florida. Chain stores kill a lot of trees by displaying them outside too early and not watering them enough in the summer. We had some apple trees locally in a Tractor Supply in February. We had a foot of snow on the ground and the regional manager for them said company policy said they needed to be outside. The locals wouldn't put them outside.

They will go on sale for about half price and I will buy a few and then water as needed thru the summer. Once I can get them thru that first summer I have had real good luck with them. I hope you are right about my "stick". I was pretty pissed off when I found it and vowed to kill the SOB responsible.....but he never showed up again!
