I think logging is the single best deer habitat improvement. Hands down the best. 3 years later its on for a decade.

I'll agree with Batman.....as long as it's done right, logging can be a great improvement. It certainly has been for me. Not CRP buffers, not food plots, not water holes, not fruit or nut tree planting, not hinge cutting.....LOGGING. It creates food and cover faster than anything else. I have had 2 different cuts on my place and look forward to the next one. I negotiated the trail clean-up and even culvert installs and the like all as part of the project. I improved my habitat and property access and put some money in my pocket all at the same time. I also suggest leaving the tops. You may want them moved around some, but resist the temptation to cut them up. They make great natural cages.

I tried for a few years to hinge/plot/etc my way to change and logging was the only real tool. But I did not get paid shit for the trees!

That looks good. What kind of trees did they cut? I'm assuming finding someone to take the other tree types (basswood, cottonwood, elm, etc.) might be a little difficult, but I certainly want to take those trees out as well if I take out a bunch of oaks.

Mostly aspen, ash, bitch, maple. Small amount of poor basswood and oak. Mostly pulp with 10% or so being saw logs

Nice looking cuts Snowracer. Do you have any pockets of evergreens on your property? If not I'd think about getting done in there next spring.

Bedding working as desired. Plots are starting to look like plots but may need another year or two before they are ‘dirt’

Nice looking cuts Snowracer. Do you have any pockets of evergreens on your property? If not I'd think about getting done in there next spring. I have a 16 acre planting of white pine and some oak that is about 14 years old. I thought about adding Norway spruce clumps in the logged area...

I think if you do add some that you'll be happy you did in 8-10 years. Deer like dark areas and edges that the spruce will give you.

This info makes me feel a little more confident in having some logging done. Now I just need to find someone who will take all the trees and not just the oaks. I'm sure there will be some problems along the way, but at the end of the day I should have better hunting after logging than I currently have. More importantly that better hunting should come at the time when my kids start hunting.

I have had a few that turned into a bitch tree as they fell into another tree before, but they didn't start out that way!
