Does anyone have a good source for cheaper ROD? I maybe looking to put in a couple patches. My soil is not very wet on a normal year, so cuttings have not worked that great in the past. Thanks! What's "cheap"? Local SWCD has 25 ROD bareroot for $37.50 It seems like the price for ROD varies greatly since it’s commonly sold as an ornamental shrub also. The WI DNR looks like they are out already. I did find that the IA DNR and Virginia have them at fair prices. I just don’t hear much from others using those two sources. VA would be out of my zone, but they have some other cheap options for common Apple and Chinese Chestnut that are intriguing. NH- I think that I would prefer planting bare roots once and protecting them vs babying cuttings at the house for a year and transplanting even though that would be the cheapest option.

Here’s a link to the N.H. state nursery. You could get 100 bare root ROD for $80 plus shipping so they’ll end up being $1 a piece. You can’t order online though but, I have had good luck getting seedlings from them. www.nh.gov/nhnursery/If you’re interested in apples for habitat then you’re in the best place on the internet for knowledge. Ask us any questions. Two of my best growing chestnuts came out of Florida.

ROD cutting progress from spring 2020. First two were some of the ones I didn't cage, but stuck inside the branches of a downed tree for protection. Last one is a caged grouping nearby. cool stuff! what do u think was your survival %

Last one is a caged grouping nearby. cool stuff! what do u think was your survival % Overall it looked like around 30% in the cages and my cutting garden. I’d say the best cuttings, thicker and more buds, had a much higher survival rate. What I liked about this experiment is getting survival in the natural cage of the downed tree. As the tree breaks down hopefully the rod will be at a survivable state.
