I hope that Reeds or Scheels or Sportsmans Wharehouse opens a store in Brainerd. Somebody will need to fill the void.

I made a decision to stop shopping at Gander about 10 years ago. They were always "sold out" of in-season merchandise.
Their Gander Guide Series stuff may have improved during the last decade but it was junk back in the day.

I was never impressed with them. They didn't specialize in anything enough to be taken seriously. I did get a gun safe from them, but beyond that, they were simply a commodity item store.

Most of their labels were pure junk. They seldom offered the top tier stuff....more often peddling sub-par junk. They fell into the price above quality problems some years ago. Never able to compete with better stores......IMO.

There was a time in the 80's when Cabela's catalog and Gander's catalog were about toe to toe. Then, in a MAJOR moment of weakness.......Gander management got cold feet and made some terrible decisions. All of as sudden they declared bankruptcy......and Cabelas bought their catalog biz......and Gander sold the stores to Holiday. Cabelas prospered.....and Holday boys (some of the Holiday "sons" play money) never got their program straightened out. They never had a good biz plan.....IMO. The "old" Gander management really screwed up......and it was never the same company again. I might add.....that my new company had just made the biggest sale of it's reloading tools ever to Gander........and while the check to pay me was "cut" they would not mail it to me. So I nearly went broke early on......but ended up getting about .80 cents on the dollar from the Gander Bankruptcy move. Really sad how they declared bankruptcy under those conditions. Some say it's a move akin to Montgomery Wards screw up after WWII. Cold feet by the management. I suppose they were covering their assess.....and wallksd away with a good payout? Screw 'em. Good riddance. Frankly.....Im glad Cabelas is sold too. Buncha whores at that shop. At least Johnny Morris has some ethics. Go Johnny Go!

Same here. Our Gander is horribly run. They only reason I stilll went there was because they opened early for live bait during ice season. They stopped that 4 years ago and I have only been back a few times since. Still don't want them to close because they are 5 minutes from my house and right where I get on the high way to go to camp. They were my oh shit I forgot something stop. Their pricing has always been the highest around, even their sale prices are no real sale. Shocked they lasted this long, other than Christmas time there is never more than a handful of cars in the parking lot.

I have very fond memories of the original Gander Mountain store in Wilmont, WI. I lived in that area when I was very young and always looked forward to saving up a few bucks to go buy the hottest new fishing lure whenever we were going over there. That was the heyday of Gander Mountain. Everything you could want and very competitive pricing. Once they filled for bankruptcy the first time, it went completely in the tank.

Years back, I had them mount a scope I purchased from them on a new gun for my daughter.
It shot well for a few years, then started to drift.
So I found a loose screw in the mounts with some steel wool tucked into the stripped screw hole.

From what I read they are filing bankruptcy for reorganization. They are not closing according to what I read.

Dang guys. We have a Gander, a Dicks Sporting Goods, and a Cabelas in Wichita. Gander is the best of all of them... made Cabelas look bad most of the time. Must be a fluke or just good management at that particular store.

Shortly after the first bankruptcy, Gander sold their catalog sales right(s) to Cabelas. Turned out to be a disasterious move as it included online sales. I'm not sure how it was resolved, but Gander had zero online presence until fairly recently.

Gander can lick my swollen nut sack. They are overpriced and have nothing to offer that the competition doesn't.
