Why can’t the SNAP/ foodstamp program be separate? It is always the biggest bottleneck in the Farm bill and has nothing to do with farming or agricultural production, yet it is 80% of the budget? I wonder how many billions of dollars it costs us every cycle and farmers are left hanging waiting for them to make the deals to come to an agreement on SNAP.
I can see how forestry management is a part of agriculture. There won’t be to much of that left since they just pledged $500m of the federal forestry management funding to CA for the wildfires.
Almost all the fires are because of the tinder dry desert scrub and vegetation. Yet people keep building on steep hillsides and areas where they know there are going to be cyclic wildfires and mudslides.
That will be the excuse to push opening the national forests to logging. If they can try to open up the BWCA to mining, anything is fair game I guess.

Perception is important to politicians so I doubt there is any motivation to shine a light onto the food stamp program. |

Holy crap! I just looked up “FY 2018 Budget USDA Forest Service”
It shows a bunch of the changes that have already been made.
Looks like a bigtime increase in logging, putting in communication ( probably cell towers), in National forests. Allowing applications for grazing in Eastern National Forests as well as Western.
I never heard that on the news.

It also looks like they want to put a stop on further acquisitions of federal lands and get the OK to start selling off federal lands...wow

Without snap we would never get a decent bill for farmers via the farm bill only way we get the urban vote

I thought the Dems were a lot more liberal on the farm/ conservation type programs. I never realized there is a difference in the rural vs urban voting.

I think it could be split, Dems know that they have to vote ag, or they lose key voting states like Iowa, and Wisconsin.

Yes that is true, but should agriculture issues and farm subsidies and conservation bills all be tied up in legislation for months or even years because they cannot come to an agreement on snap? I think something with as large of a program as snap (80% of the total budget of the farm bill ) being separated would stop a lot of pork belly legislation and streamline the rest of the country’s agriculture legislation.

That's how congress works. You've got to have a majority agreement between everyone to steal from the taxpayers. It won't pass? Keep adding shit to it until it does.

We deal a lot with the farm bill and without snap in there we would never probably even have a farm bill or crop insurance. That is the only way we can get urban vote for some of the ag issues. I know it sounds crazy but there is a reason why they have kept it in there. Just sayin

Your right, the political games will go on either way. Who knows how long it will take. The 2012 Farm Bill ended up being the 2014 bill

I was talking with some farmers on the current payments for the drop in prices due to the tariffs. I guess the soy payments are OK but the corn payments are a joke.
They get half of the corn payments and maybe the second half later. I will bet government salaries and benefits for those who send out the corn payments will far outpace the dollars in the actual corn payment.
