If you had conditions to grow it, would you? There's a long shot I can get to my interior bedding work yet this winter and be ready for some trees. Just wondering if anyone would do it, or go with something else like balsam or blacks.

Nothing wrong with diversity. Planted 5 a few years ago. Saw one brightly colored tree this fall about 5’ tall. Probably does absolutely nothing for deer but was nice to look at.

I planted 100 last year, with some survivors... I’d say 1/2? Guess
I like them in Otter Tail County. Bunch in my area.

Wouldn't hesitate to plant tamarack. They grow fast in my wet areas even though bucks love to rub them. They're a neat tree.

I agree with diversity. SD, I'd plant in the tops next spring of some of the trees you cut this winter. Paul Knox recommended that. It should give the trees you plant a few years of protection.

Just looked at my lone survivor today. Rubbed to shit. We’ll see if it survives.

Well then that settles it. I might even cage 5-10 of them, if I get around to planting some.
Shit or even exclusion fence them instead.

I planted some just for shits because they were free and the next year they'd already shot up about a foot and a half. With protection they ought to really go.

I've got marsh I'd like to plant tamaracks in but it has RC or is pretty wet. Do you have any growing in very wet conditions?

Bare root and they were planted with wet feet on my low ground. Mostly reed canary, willows and cattails.

Tamarack is one of my favorite trees. Grow fast and allow grass usually to grow underneath which makes for great bedding areas. We have planted tons of them and they grow fast

They have to be one of the fastest growing trees. They provide great cover until they drop their leaves. I have seen the deer browse them here. If your deer migrate out for winter they are a great option. If you are trying to provide shelter through winter, not so great.

Looked at a property near Parkers Prairie a few years ago...and tamarack (planted) were 20 feet tall and deer were really bedding in it.
