Why does the usda get picky about pigs? It seems pasture grown pigs are pretty popular with the foodie types these days. Couldn't you claim you are filling the pasture pig market? I think if they were my pigs I can likely shoot them with a bow or gun because I am a farmer. Law says it has to be humane. Bring somebody else in to shoot one and it may be a guilty until proven innocent scenario. I do like the way a sounder can destroy a peice of reed canary grass and watch the Forbes take their place. Hell of fertilized seed bed as well.

Good luck with the pears. Mine have been almost a complet bust. Still have a couple hanging on. If these are your first trees I would abort the pears. Zone 3 and pears don’t get along. Good luck. I still have 2’ a Of snow and this week is cold, I am running out of time to get up there to get my scion wood. Well, they are ordered and paid for from SLN. Two are "Cabot" and two are "Ely". What the hell, I'll replace whatever fails with something else in a year or two. The description on the website says the Cabot are ND hardy and the Ely is from scion harvested from a tree that's "been reported to be growing in Ely MN for 150 years." LOL We'll see about that. If they die, they die. When they do, I'll have cages all ready for whatever I put in to replace them. Good move going with SNL. Hopefully they will work for you. I had Cummins pick their most cold hardy pears. Most cold hardy was not cold hardy enough. My three best pear trees are a zone 5 Ayers still going strong after 5 years and I have two pears grown from seed from a grocery store pear that are tough as nails. They are thorny pears too so I am hoping I have some kind of mutant pear growing.

If you do that then those two you chose have a good chance of making it. Get them good light on the east, south, and west sides.

He had several varieties. The pears I’ve planted have grown maybe 15” in 4-5 years. I may trade him some chestnuts for some grafted pears.

15" in 4-5 years? Oh, man. That's slow..... I'll give it a shot and see how it goes.

My plans won’t change much from what I’ve been doing all winter. I’ll keep cutting firewood and clearing plot areas. I need to continue to prune apple trees when I can.

I planted pears first so they are in the best spots. They put on good growth then die back in the winter. I wish I would have done the right apples in those spots because they would be 5 years old now. Oh well, trial and error. If I ever get a pear it will be a great success. Fingers crossed this year on one tree.

I will see if my pear and the one graft on a limb of it survived this winter. I cut the other one down a few years ago.

I have both those pears at my place and they have made it 3 years. This year will be a real test as I think my place saw -35 or worse. If they make it this year they are going to make it.

If he doesn't want to swap them out for crabs, I'll just go ahead and plant them and see what they do. Hopefully, if they aren't going to make it, they will die in the first year or two, rather than languish.

If they take I’ve heard from several people that deer prefer pears over apples.

I'd still give them a try too. That way I know they will make it where I'm at 😝
