I got out today and knocked down 10-15 trees for the deers and collected scion. It sucks walking in the woods still FYI.... I am getting used to wearing snowshoes while pruning and collecting scion.

I need to get blinds moved and set up correctly over my big plots. I need to cut and stack firewood. And then plant beans. That is about it. Oh I need to take a soil test and see how my soil ammendments are taking shape.

Got this note from Connor at SLN. I'm going ahead with my pears.
"At this point all I could really do is cancel the pears; we are pretty much scraping the bottom on crabs, especially the super hardy. That being said, I must respectfully disagree with your neighbors! I have sold pears to harsher areas than yours, and you selected perfect varieties for your climate. You can do it! (If you want). Let me know!"

I think you are making the right call sticking with the pear order to see what happens.

In a few years you'll all know if it worked out or not.

In a few years you'll all know if it worked out or not. I like his confidence. I wish I got my pears from him. I think Cummins just picked the best zone 4 pears they had for me. Unfortunately zone 4 doesn’t always cut it where I am at.

I think Kooch will be good if he makes sure he protects them and has lots of sunlight going to them.

For my kill plot this year I'm hoping to plant some buckwheat in early June, mow down as it starts to flower mid to late July, come back a week later and spray and pray with brassicas? Sound like an all right plan? Weeds have gotten crazy in this plot and hoping to get ahead with the buckwheat and spray and pray. Thoughts welcome...

How are you planting the buckwheat? Are you tilling the soil?
You might try a burn down of the weeds before the buckwheat otherwise it sounds great.

I’ll be tilling. Good suggestion on the burn down prior to buckwheat planting. After burn down though are buckwheat seeds small enough where I would could broadcast them without re-tilling? There is stubble from last years pheasants forever mix that will have to be tilled in.
