Sometimes you can get decent stuff....many times the varieties are more for people than deer and you seldom know what root stock they are on. This is pretty common for box stores. I have had some good...some not so good results. I now prefer to get my fruit trees from nurseries. You can find some gems once in a while...but buyer beware.

One has to be mindful that you most likely will not know what exact rootstocks those are on, which can make a huge difference in the finished tree in both size and time to bear fruit.

Just saw these at Baxter fleet farm. Pretty good variety and $19.99 What varieties and is rootstock indicated? I look at these last year and the rootstock was not indicated and the employees did not know. The trees look nice. With a little digging you could possibly find out what rootstock they use. If I was to guess it's probably Mlll.

That's a pretty nice variety. I've had decent luck with big box store rootstock trees at my place in SE MN, but no luck with them in NW WI.
For $20 you're not out much if they don't do too well though.

Picked up a couple semi dwarfs at Jung tonight. Cortland and a Whitney. Jung trees have done well in the past.

I haven't looked this year but last year when I was looking at trees at Fleet Farm they were from a nursery in Minnesota. I would think that they would be good to go in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Call Dan and Jerrys and see if they can give info on the rootstock. They are in Monticello MN.

I was at Fleet today and several are marked with M7 rootstock. I like the varieties... dolgo, chestnut, centennial, goodland, Red Baron, and I thought I saw a liberty.
I checked with my buddy, and he says M7 is 50-60 per cent of standard sized. They have survived for him in our area and so far appear to have survived last winter. He says M7 also bear as younger trees.
