One way to find out if you have a pack of wolves around your area......is to go out at night on some backroads and HOWL......then listen for the reply. This time of year is perfect. Can be exciting.

One way to find out if you have a pack of wolves around your area......is to go out at night on some backroads and HOWL......then listen for the reply. This time of year is perfect. Can be exciting. I have an interesting side note on this. Back in the 80's when wolves were just starting to make their comeback in Northwest Wisconsin my buddy and I were up for a week of bow hunting. We had gone out to a bar/restaurant and got in a discussion with bartender about wolves. At this time most people thought that it was cool that wolves were being sighted in the area. There were only 3 packs that they knew of in Bayfield County. Well after a while the bartender tells us if we have any questions we should ask the lady sitting at the end of bar as she was in charge of tracking the wolves. So my buddy and I have a long conversation with her, she assures us that the wolf packs stay almost always in Wilderness areas that they had set up. She also assured us that there were no wolves in the area that we hunted even though I had saw some sign that I suspected was made by wolves. She than told us that if we really had wolves in area to howl just as it got dark. So the next night my buddy and I get back to vehicle after bow hunting and I remember what she told us about howling, so I howl. Well not 1 but 4 different wolves returned my howl and they were fucking close and had us surrounded. The hair on the back of my neck stood up. The rest of the week we both came out a few minutes earlier with our flashlights on. At that time I knew that the people keeping track of wolves had no idea how many wolves were there.

I walked my OTC property yesterday and saw three very healthy deer and allot of beds on my place. While I was in the neighborhood I decided to stop and visit a neighbor to the north who I had not met. After last years "Managed" designation and all the shooting I wanted to start talking to my neighbors and hand out the OTC PowerPoint presentation BLB produced. This neighbor hunts 3 different properties totaling over 500 acres. All of these properties are close to his place on 138 and they run cameras on all three. He said there is a pack that works between his place and his other properties near Almora. He figures 5-6 animals which they had pictures of.
He commented I have wolves on my property because he does. Most likely they are here to stay lets hope we get a season on them and we can all apply for licenses.

Agree... how did they do on deer?? Nothing big this year but they have some on camera. They were complaining more about unproductive pine tree planting the NRCS had them do 20 years ago then anything. Sounds like they provide little cover anymore because the NRCS had them planted to close together. I don't know them well enough yet but am going to make a real effort with all the neighbors this year. It looked like they like there beer so we have common ground. Once I get to know them better I am sure they will share deer info.
