No pictures, but tent caterpillars were pretty thick at my cabin last weekend. They were just starting to eat the leaves, so I think I caught them at the right time. I'm sure that more will move in, but at least I killed a bunch of them. Those are disgusting little creatures. Did you hit those trees with oil this spring? Since I've started spraying oil/copper before bud break I've largely eliminated egg masses in my fruit trees. The little bastards still show up in wild cherries big time though.

No, these trees were at my cabin and I've never sprayed up there. I sprayed dormant oil at my house though and haven't seen any tent caterpillars there.

A look at my two orchards as well as at a few scattered other trees shows that trees on heavier ground appear to have a much better fruit set than those on lighter soil. Makes sense I suppose

I checked my main deer orchard behind my house and I have a pretty solid fruit set this year. Is now a good time to do a bonide type general purpose fruit tree spray?

Yep, hitting your trees as soon as the petals have fallen is an important time. I'm spraying tomorrow morning. I'm at least 2-3 days late

That's a good point since Ben asked about a Bonide/bottled type spray. I have little experience with pre-bottled insecticides/fungicides. I do recall burning some leaves when using the old Sevin formula (carbaryl) I prefer to spray in the mornings so that all of the spray dries quickly, I feel like I kill fewer bees that way. I've also read that Captan and Imidan are more effective when they dry quickly (they also require acidic water to not break down quickly, I treat the water with citric acid before adding the chemicals). You guys are best off following the labels for whatever you're spraying

I’ll look at the label tomorrow and see what timing is recommended. My 3m respirator arrived, so I’ll be all ready to go.
Do you guys also spray younger apple trees or just those that are old enough to have fruit?
I need to spray my apple trees, finish planting my garden and pumpkin plots and hopefully catch a few fish this weekend.
I’ll also need to water a few apple trees as well since it is getting very dry down here. The last 2 days I missed heavy rains by just a few miles. Hopefully my luck changes soon.

I try to spray all of my trees, young and old, at least the first time. If I don't notice a lot of insect or disease pressure on following spray days, I'll skip the younger trees. I have a few younger trees that are apparently not scab resistant, so those get hit every time. I hit my trees this morning. The wind cooperated for the most part. I only got a couple facefulls of spray. Good luck fishing

I am thinking of transplanting 2 trees out of my nursery this weekend to my orchard. If I keep a soaker hose on them every 3 days ago they should whether that transplant shouldn't they?

Good luck fishing When you sprayed this morning, did you take time to try to hit each side of the tree from all directions or did you just drive by one side of the tree and call it good? I ask because I'm a little worried about driving around the tall grass, clover and vegetation around my trees this time of year. I accidentally ran over a fawn with my atv on Monday while driving the edge of my CRP while checking my soybean field. The little fawn ran off, so there is a chance it lived. I have no desire to repeat that again though, so I'll certainly need to be extremely careful when pulling my apple tree sprayer in the trailer behind my ATV.

Soaker hose every 2-3 days for a few hours each tree, until the end of August (or rainfall improves) = probably good to go

I do most of my spraying on foot, not on the atv. I don't go all the way around each tree, but do try to hit enough different angles to get the entire tree. Obviously, spraying right into the breeze probably isn't a good idea. My sprayer is strapped to the back rack of the atv. I keep my main orchards mowed, so hidden fawns aren't an issue. Neither are blooming flowers/weeds to gather insecticide and then kill bees. I do have to take a couple in woods trails to get to some different tree locations. Those I also mow, but not as short/often as the orchards. There, I do need to go slowly and keep a close eye out for fawns.
