I’m going to try it. These trees will never be able handle a heavy load. Might as well find out now. Does injuring the bark stimulate root growth? I did notice a couple of them have knots above the ground putting out a bunch of roots. Those have been there for years so maybe burying them will spur growth.

These green beetles are hitting one newly planted crab hard and have started on another. I don’t think I have ever seen them before. Can anyone identify them?

i’m starting to see life in a few grafts I counted out. The tiny rootstock is not good for grafting, but I’m very happy to see a few late arrivals.

They had chewed on about every leaf on my crab apple tree that was planted this spring. Links say they are usually not too harmful except on young saplings.

You sure they weren't there after other bugs that were chewing on leaves?

Orchard Plot progress Dolgo fully loaded. I thinned out some and removed the fruit on the thinner branches. Norland with just a couple apples growing that I left on.

You sure they weren't there after other bugs that were chewing on leaves? I couldn’t rule it out, but most aren’t there now. I could not see any aphids. These were on top of the leaves and green in color like the leaves.

I suspect the drought caused them to focus on watered plants. I hope they disappear for the season. Some aerosol spray knocked their numbers down.

I've got some of last year's grafts out of their 3' hardware cloth cylinders. I knew I should get them sprayed with repellent last week, but didn't get it done. I just hit them and sure enough, I had one pear central leader nipped off already. It should recover nicely, but it still pisses a guy off. No more 3' cylinders, I'm going with 4' now. Even with those I'll need to spray the central leaders until they're 6'+. I don't recall who started the concrete mesh for apple cages deal, but I know I was one of the first ones posting about using the stuff on the old Q forum. While it is certainly more durable and more affordable, it doesn't do as good of a job protecting new growth as does 2"x4" welded wire cages. Since spraying exposed growth with Deer Out I've had zero browsing. I just gave the new growth another shot. The stuff seems to work here.

The neighbor and I looked at my Northland crab towards the end of our walk this morning. I didn't snap a pic, but the thing is just loaded. If we don't get rain, I'd guess it will abort most of the fruit yet however. Too bad they're not much better eating than a Dolgo. My Pillsbury crab is also still loaded. Trees on my main orchard are showing yellowing/browning leaves. Without an inch or more of rain in the next week or two, things are going to get really ugly I fear.

I wish there was a dislike button.... that sucks
Next weekend I plan to fill a 200 gallon tank and water my apples at the farm. I have not watered them yet, and havent checked them for a month. Dang this weather.
