When does this stuff finally drop so wildlife can eat it?? It varies a bit from year to year. Some have a slow drop over months. A vigorous shaking or strong wind speeds things along.

The turkeys at my place often fly up in the trees to get late hanging fruit. While up there they drop a bunch of fruit that is then available for other critters to pick up. I bet pheasants or grouse could also knock off fruit as well.

I was just out cutting a few scions and checking out my trees. Last year's drought is very evident in the growth (or lack thereof) on most of my fruit trees. I will have very little pruning to do on most of the trees. Smitty's Seedling, NW Greening, and Zestar did have great growth last year. Not sure why they did so much better than most of the other trees.

Those that had lots of fruit in 23, have less pruning and less scion. If you some to spare, please save me some Pipsqueak scion.

Laid in bed last night counting large/older wild crabs that I want to topwork yet. I came up with 8. Along with some smaller wild crabs and rootstocks that I need to re-graft due to graft failures I think I've got 15 total to work with. I believe I will order a few varieties of people apples from TOC to add to the mix Sending my order to TOC tomorrow 2 sticks each of Gideon Sweet, Sweet Delicious, and Scott's Winter. One stick of Moore's Sweet, I have/had one successful graft of Moore's Sweet from this spring but given the drought I won't be surprised if it doesn't wake up next spring. I'll have to sit down and go over my list of what's growing here someday. I've got to be pushing 100 varieties of apples and pears.I went through my list today...85 varieties of apples/crabs and 14 of pear. That isn't counting a few wild crab trees that I don't intend to topwork.

Same for some of my franken apple trees. Fruit load snaps them off. My list is not current and I must have 50-70 in named seedlings from crabs.

I don't recall you talking about your pears much Stu. Do you have pears producing?? If so, what flavors? pears are definitely slower to produce fruit than apples or crabs. I have Ure, Early Gold, Golden Spice, Beireschmitt, Okolo, and Walden Large currently producing fruit. Of those, Beireschmitt is definitely the tastiest and earliest producer. I am hoping Southworth has a few fruit this year, but time will tell. Most of the others will likely take some time yet.

Good news is that it made it through the two years of drought and actually put on decent growth last year. It was tiny to start with. Have a Parker and a Luscious planted in 2019 that are both good looking, strong trees. Had a couple blossoms last year but no fruit. Hoping for some fruit this year to try out.

I just realized my Luscious won't pollinate my Parker...I swear I researched this before planting. Oh well, I need my Bschmitt to survive and thrive then.

Smitty’s seedling has to be one of the fastest growing topworks I have ever had. perhaps it is also in just the right spot for soil quality and moisture. I put two limb spreaders in it. Smitty’s seems to have an upward growth pattern.

I was able to train the mother Smitty's tree to have pretty horizontal limbs, but it sure does throw out a shitload of vertical watersprouts every year.
