Thats a nice looking tree. I grafted a wickson this spring, so it's good to hear they are a good wildlife and cider tree. What rootstock is your tree on?

I'm starting to think my Firecracker crab may have been a victim of winter. It still shows green cambium, but it isn't putting on leaves. The fruit wasn't my favorite so if it is dead, it won't be that big of a heart breaker I guess.

Could be voles

Could be voles I noticed 3-4 trees like this yesterday. I thought they had survived but this winter might end up claiming more than I thought. They are trees that had been through at least one winter prior to. I am still holding out hope. My wolf rivers look like this every year and they keep surviving.

I’ll use the cage on another tree. I had a Kerr do this last year and another tree at home died.

You should keep trimming it like that for the next 10 years to see how tall you can get it to grow! My winter wildlife crabs have proven to be hardy and consistent producers after year 5.

Snowsweet was planted last spring and might have lost some limbs on the south side. They still have buds and green cambium, but not progressing. I will give them a bit of time, yet. Those two blooming trees in the background are seedlings that I planted on an old fence line. Through the years, the fence caught blowing dirt and created a mound for planting.

Your area is definitely ahead of mine Art. I'd guess close to a week. Wild plums are just hitting full bloom here. My Whitney crab is pretty close to full bloom, but that's an early bloomer.

I need to check my Whitney for blossoms, but it has not given me an apple yet. I need to check my back trees on the slight north slope. I did find one best of tent caterpillars in the deer apples SW of the house. I also found an apple that I had planted many years ago that was surrounded by tag alders. I released it as well as opened up around two of the apple trees from Grandma. They are full of blossoms this year. Lots of old rubs from last year in that area.
