That Bur Gambel might do well in other states, or different soil types? I might try it again, maybe in Iowa?

If I recall correctly, Bur Gambel are more of a western oak that prefers a slightly alkaline soil. I think they grow naturally in arid areas with light soil...that's why I tried them on my folks' sand. I'd have to do some Googling to see if my memory is accurate.

It definitely pays to release oaks. I released this northern red oak in 2018. It had lots of acorns last fall. It’s loaded with hulls. It’s only 4” dbh. I would not have thought that it would have had acorns that soon.

Here’s a Concordia oak that was planted in 2015 and went unprotected until this spring. I’ve opened up around it and caged it. It’s planted near a 200 year old stone foundation. Looks like it’s putting on spring growth now. I don’t know if it’ll ever produce because currently I don’t have any white oaks nearby. The turkey feather is from a spot nearby where the turkeys lie down and dust themselves.

Did an oak check yesterday .... I’ve got some good growth on a few Bur Oaks, plus some planted acorns are emerging.

I’ve got hundreds of young oaks having their first acorns this year. The property was logged in 2003-4. So they’re under 20 years old.

I opened this oak up last winter. It was dropping acorns yesterday. I’ve got a few more oaks to clear in this patch in late December.

Would this acorn planter be worth $180? It seems like a great concept.

I’m really happy with the growth on this red oak I released in 2018. It should be dropping lots of acorns here for many years.

We did a little inspection for natural oaks. Found a bunch. Step by step, clear the cover around them and let em buck! Most were 2-3 feet tall.
