The cat must be joking. Your not really going to cash out a 401K to buy a flail mower are you? **rollover and convert. Not cash out.

Swisher or DR? I love my DR walk behind. I just assumed the DR was better because it's what a friend had and he told me so. Cost more, that's for sure.

flail equals crazy talk. Swisher Roughcut!!!!!! just a friendly reminder About any other product we talk about, we always gravitate towards the best. Take a power drill for example. If you're presented with the choice of going Dewalt or Makita for X dollars, or the Menards store brand for $50, which one would we buy? Stands, blinds, chainsaws, wheelers, boats, fishing line, boots, camp welders, and so on. I'm puzzled why the mower world is the place we'd purposely select the less effective option. And I'm not picking at you BLB, I'm on an island with the cat on this mower thing.

If I had the money today, It'd be in the garage. You're on the right track here though.

Take my roughcut for a weekend. Do some stuff. You tell me its inferior. Honestly,,,,, I am serious. Take it and use it. Its at our cabin on East Battle Lake.
Try it and see what it gives you for results. Go blaze some trails. Cut some grass(not its best target, but go over it a couple times). I have borrowed it to friends more than once. Its a beast.

I have a 52" swisher rough cut and it works well. I think the DR is probably a better unit but costs significantly more. Swisher's are at a good price point which allot of plotters appreciate.

When it's time to invest in a tow behind model, I'll activate the Legacy/JPS network to help find the best value possible on the used market. Other priorities are in line before this purchase. It sure will be nice not to mow 2 acres with the walk behind beast. The other option is to just keep spraying. It seems to work just fine. While I'm still actively blazing trail, I'll stick with the push model.

For the price of the ATV flail mower you could get a cheap tractor and a tractor mounted flail mower.
My thoughts are a tractor is more of a serious tool while an ATV is more of a toy. You know your needs better then anyone else though. If you feel the ATV flail mower is the way to go who cares what everyone else thinks. Not many willing to pay that much for a mower so if it doesn't work out you might have a hard time selling it.

I've been trying to tell him this same thing for years now. The kid just cannot get this thru his head....grin. He claims his land is too boggy to use a tractor and he likes the way the flail mowers shred the clippings. Somebody buys these things......you cant save 'em all. . I can see his logic to a small degree.....but I would instead get a lightweight tractor with good floatation tires and a three point mower. Flail or rotary.....either way......mow where I could and forget the rest. I think a loader would be huge. Then buy a $1000 ATV to joy ride on your property. Either way you got two engines. OTHERWISE.....at a minimum I would buy a UTV over the ATV so I could get a windshield and not get beaten to death by brush and tree limbs. And.....I could so so much more with the UTV bed which hauls stuff around and be able to have others ride with me much easier. Also can put more weight on the front with a UTV as they have HEAVEIR SUSPENSIONS for snow plowing and such. Just saying. If SD would take this advice.....he would thank us later. Alas....his mind is made up.....dont confuse him with the facts. . FORE!

At any rate you can still buy parts for those flail mowers (most any of em) and get them in shape for little money. Put one on the back of an 8n or Jubilee ford.....and you could go anywhere SD intends to go with a wheeler. Just saying. NICE FIND!

The little 48 inch to 52 inch tractor flail mowers are pretty expensive also.
Every once in a while there is an old Mott or Alamo for sale, but not too often.

Especially five footers which would fit the small tractors quite well. They would last a lifetime....with just a little care. Easier to find and repair (and cheaper too) than what SD is falling for.
