My go-to brassica mix is DER, groundhog radishes and purple top turnips. I've had good luck overseeding them on freshly sprayed ground. I did that a little over a week ago and if we get rain I'm expecting a decent amount of deer food. Is anyone getting away from the Tillage radish? I know that was LC's thing but I just find the tubers to get soft and mushy and then stink. I'm putting more rape and PTT in my mix now and no radish. Seems to be better for me at least. I keep spreading some because I have soil that needs improving. The tubers do get soft too early but I always plant PTT with them and more of PTT than radish.

The pasja turnips I used last year were a good addition to that mix. The have a smaller carrot like bulb but larger a top with regrowth from browsing. Welter’s sells a brassica mix with all of those for $2.50 a pound. welterseed.com/inventory/big-buck-brassical-mix/

I like the tillage radishes since they seem to draw in the deer sooner in the fall than the rest of the brassicas. They can take some of the browsing pressure off my soybeans.
The deer here eat every part of the radish above ground, but the bottom of the root does just get mushy and rot in the spring. The part that rots is good for the soil I guess.

Yup deer prefer radish over PTT at our place. They’ll eat everything eventually but radish gets them going.

Worms love the radish stuff that rots in the ground. Worms are good for the ground.

I’ve got some nice turnips (despite) the lack of rain.

I’ve got some nice turnips (despite) the lack of rain. And they eat them!

A fun mistake to make is to plan a big plot of radishes upwind of the house. Their rotting spring scent is just what a wife likes coming into the kitchen windows.

I’ve struggled to grow brassicas the last few years. So I finally did a soil sample for the two plots. Each plot is roughly an acre in size. It looks like a 100 lbs of urea at planting but I’m not sure about what to do on the rest. Here are the soil samples. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I was happy to see the ph was good. First time doing a soil sample so not sure how to interpret it.

bring up P and K - I'd have to look at my food plot book, but I thought they recommended 30 and 150 ppm respectively. That is going off my questionable memory though, but I think that is pretty close. Your organic matter and pH are good, so once you correct P and K you will get a good brassica crop. But to be honest I'm surprised you haven't had decent luck recently since your numbers aren't too bad at all overall.
When and how did you plant your brassicas before and what happened?

What did you do to prep before planting?

I rotate one year of clover and rye then brassica. I wasn’t putting any urea in I thought I would have enough N from clover.
