The 'public land owner I hunt for meat' movement seems to be gaining traction. Great PR move by the DNR. It's possible that deer hunters like those of us who frequent deer forums are dinosaurs. We may represent a tiny fraction of deer hunters. I don't know. I know that it's clear that the only deer group in this state with any actual "power" certainly isn't representative of my deer hunting/deer management desires. They must believe that what they are doing is what the majority wants. I must be in the minority

I could build a 2 acre pen in the right spot and trap every deer in section in about 1 week. Then the DNR could killl them all.
You dont need hunters to control the deer herd.

Hunting is the only realistic way to control the deer herd. Other methods have been tried and failed. Is it possible to control the herd without hunting? I suppose it may be. Could it realistically be done? I doubt it.

The 'public land owner I hunt for meat' movement seems to be gaining traction. Great PR move by the DNR. I am a private land owner and I hunt for meat as do some of my friends. Antlers are ok, too. Point is that we need to know when to stop and not abuse the resource.

Point is that we need to know when to stop and not abuse the resource.I think what happened in large portions of WI back when the WI DNR was allowing/encouraging a huge deer kill was that a lot of hunters started questioning things. When you go from seeing 5, 10, 20, 30....deer a day to hunting several days without seeing a deer you start to think something isn't right(at least any non-morons do) . I think MN deer hunters were pretty close to that point a couple years ago. Had all the state's deer groups decided to take an aggressive approach things could have changed here. That didn't happen. When you're in a fight and have a clear opportunity for a throat punch you take it..at least if you want to win you do.

My little corner of MN is doing okay. All I can do is try my best to make sure that continues.

I'm a bit worried about my Bertha place. I'm surrounded by amish there and they usually shoot everything. That early youth hunt is going to hurt for sure. Really thinking about selling out since land prices are popping in Todd county right now.

The realtor I'm listing my sebeka place with said with the deer I've gotten off there and the trail cam pics I have that it'd be pretty easy to sell at a decent profit because there's a lot of interest in the area.

One other concern I'm seeing close by is that pieces are starting to get broken up into smaller chunks as more and more people are buying up land or splitting it between family members. Adds a lot of pressure on the deer. If the piece to the south of me ever gets sold i'll be s.o.l. The guys hunting it now have no clue how to hunt it so bucks live and roll threw my place.

So.....I get to thinking. And I wonder if the deer season was closed for ten years......what would the deer population look like? Would it be out of control? ......or would numbers level off to a "natuaral" condition......as it did in time gone by. Dunno....just asking. ( get the feeling that Mother Nature would make things level off at some point.....and the deer population would self-control. What say you?

At least in many areas...especially suburbia Look at some areas in the east where hunting has been banned/limited. Folks can't even grow flowers without fencing them in. DPSMs pushing 150 or higher.

There was a coal company that owned thousands of acres in SE Ohio. It was supposed to be no hunting but there was some trespassing and light pressure. The population was very high 20 years ago. Eventually there was a massive EHD outbreak that wiped out a lot of deer including the deer on old place we leased. So many died that you could smell rotting carcasses while driving down the hi-way.
Mother Nature will level out an uncontrolled population but it will be with big swings of the pendulum. I would guess winters and predators would do the job up north.
