Certified seed only for me, it's too expensive not to.. I've also spent a significant amount of time pulling both marestail and pigweed. I can't let one go to seed! It's good to know I'm not the only deer managing idiot hand pulling weeds. Last year I spent a full work week + pulling weeds on about a 1/3 acre plot just west of my house. It was worth the time as this year it is a thick, beautiful clover/alfalfa/small burnet plot

Glad it worked for you, management seldom gets all of it so a little manual labor gets involved. Nothing as rewarding as looking at a plot that USED to have weeds!

Today I mowed three plots that had nice stands of brasica (PTT / GHR/ DER mix). All were being choked by pigweed. I suppose it was two acres total. After mowing them to the ground......I used my field cultivator to loosen up the gourd and do some disk-like tillage. Tomorrow I will run my rototiller the the plot. Then seed it into rye / oats and red and white clovers......hopefully later this week.....as I need to go to OZ next Sunday.
I see some more pigweed has started on one end of another large brasica / beans plot. Damn. I think I will try to get it thru this season.....but that shit spreads FAST!
I'm too old and busy with other stuff to want to spend those kind of hours doing hand weed harvesting. Plus I just cannot do that kinda work anymore. Not gonna happen. I gotta re-think my whole food plot plans for the future.

I pulled weeds today for about 90 minutes. At one point a deer must have got to within about 20 yards. It snorted and I about shit my shorts. It kept snorting for awhile as it tried to get downwind of me. Fun, fun, fun

I do too. It almost seems like they're responding, but I'm sure it's just coincidence.

Do Oats have the same allopathic properties to suppress the weeds that Rye does? Is it too late to plant Oats? I'm thinking I should do about 1/3 oats to 2/3 rye in a mix. Good idea? (Also gonna follow with a mix of clovers and maybe some chicory.)

(Also gonna follow with a mix of clovers and maybe some chicory.) 1. I don't think so, but they do have at least some allelopathic impact 2. Absolutely not 3. yep Perennial clover/chicory needs at least 6 weeks of growth before a hard freeze. The sooner you get them seeded the better.

Have you thought about winter wheat? Our deer prefer wheat over rye for some reason.

I prefer wheat over oats for draw, but rye over wheat for weed suppression. I like a 50/50 mix of wheat and rye for a winter carpet of green, attraction, and suppression.

Have you thought about winter wheat? Our deer prefer wheat over rye for some reason. I tried to buy some seed oats or wheat today intending to make a mix.....but all they had locally was cereal Rye. In the past my deer have liked the rye......so I'm hoping they still do. I got about 1/10" of rain so far today....in an all-day drizzle.......so I am hoping for germination and good things to follow. .
