Standing corn is great feed and cover. I remember a winter when lots of standing corn was left due to weather. Lots of bucks survived another year and seven over 200 pounds were killed in my area the following fall including my wife’s heaviest deer. That winter we had many hundreds of acres of standing corn. Deer were in the corn during rifle season. Ya, I can understand large corn fields holding some mature bucks. If mature bucks are heading to 1-5 acre corn plots, there must not be a whole lot of cover in an area I'd think. I think many deer are in the cornfields after mid July. There is cover and probably less bugs. I feel some more move to the cornfields once pheasant season starts due to human pressure.

In southern MN.....the bowhunters walk crossways through the corn rows....peering down the rows for bucks bedded in the corn. Then back off a few rows.....and put the sneak on closer for the shot. Takes some real stealth....but this is the way some big bucks are harvested in corn county. Ya, I did that a few times with both bow and shotgun on some neighboring properties when I was in my 20s and 30s. Never shot anything, but did see some deer. I can't imagine trying to walk crossrow in today's cornfields though. What do they plant now? Rows on 8 or 10" centers? Awfully tough to even be able to have room to draw a bow.

I don’t think it has to be an either or. I do think it takes a very savvy understanding of plants to pull it off though. I have been pleasantly surprised with what I was able to punch up through my clover this year. And that shit was tall and thick. It’s not perfect by any means, but I’ve got all kinds of ideas to try to improve it next year. The only thing I haven’t found from what I planted was sunflower. Odds are it grew fine and just got eaten right away. The jury is still out in my rape seeding into standing clover. There are lots of neat pics out there of people having grown soybeans underneath wheat, clover inside of field corn, oats inside of field corn, squash and pumpkins under sunflowers, and more. I have never been able to get anything, including winter rye, to punch through a thick clover plot. That is without suppressing it via spraying or disking anyway. Interesting, I had good luck the last two years broadcasting Rye and mowing. Came in good the next spring!

Next time spray the weeds to kill them before you till them up. All you did was redistribute the roots by mowing and tilling.

^. MO......I was told that not very many chemicals will kill the Pigweed.....So I mowed it down....then disked it and tilled it. Hoping the rye will control the weeds. You were AWOL for a few days.....so this was the information I took from the learned council on this site. . Was I given bad intel?? .

For brassica plantings I have the best luck disking the ground, dragging it then let the pigweeds sprout and grow a couple weeks and kill them with round up. Then I broadcast brassicas and cultipack without disturbing the ground again.
When I dig it up and plant without spraying I get a great weed crop in with my brassicas.

Gly kills pigweed and waterhemp here effectively as long as it's 5-6" or shorter

You all are lucky if gly kills it at at any stage. I've sprayed it with gly, 2,4d, and triclopyr in the driveway (kind of a control so that I can keep track of individual plants). Seen it wilt a little but it always pops back up like nothing happened. Can spray it once a week for a month and the shit just keeps growing.

That's what makes me think you're dealing with Palmer Amaranth I'm sure you are right, it's been several years since I tried to id it and like I said... locals just call it pigweed. It's a lot of fun (sarcasm)! Actually it's easy to control with Liberty, it's just that NOTHING else seems to knock it down at all. Hopefully it's a completely different beast than what you guys up north are dealing with. Our native pigweeds were easy to deal with, until this one showed up.

Yep, nothing you could spray in brassicas to kill pigweed and or waterhemp without killing the brassicas. Better way to plant brassicas is over seeding into Liberty Link soybeans. Spray twice with liberty, or generic liberty herbicide over the summer and you may have a chance at fairly clean brassicas after planting after 2 applications.

I was going to get some Milestone this fall for Thistle control in the pastures, good to know that it might be useful in the plots also. Thanks Mo.
