I have to be at over 30 hours of pulling pigweed and water hemp after today. I've got at least another 4-5 hours to go to get all that has emerged. I imagine I'll have to go through it again in another week or so. I've covered most of the plot at least twice. If the weeds just keep emerging for the rest of the summer/fall...I'll probably just throw in the towel.
I talked with a farmer I know yesterday. He said that without pre-emergent herbicide he'd never be able to deal with pigweed and water hemp.

Yep, 5oz per acre of Sonic for a pre has given us about 98% control this year where farmers have got it down.

Lots of some type of amaranth species or another growing in the production soybean fields in southern Juneau Co this past weekend. It was clearly a pigweed species, but at 60 mph it's not so easy to tell which specific variety.

^^^ so we shouldn't leave the weeds in the plot after we pull them. Got it! Too late. I've got a 1/4 acre of the shit lying on the ground. I also have a bunch of clover, chicory, and brassicas filling in where the pigweed/waterhemp/lambsquarters was. I have read in the past that pigweed that has been pollinated may still produce some seed even after being pulled. Removing the stuff would likely be the best practice

Viable seed after the head has been cut off? That's kind of a crappy thought.

I found it a bit hard to believe, but it was from a university study as I recall. I'd have to do some Googling to find that article again

I thought I had my waterhemp infested plot figured out. I thought going to a clover/alfalfa/chicory/oats mix last fall would solve the issue. Nope. Plenty of little waterhemp plants popping up in the plot. I spent a few hours pulling them out today. I am not sure I can ever win this war.

I got the same issue?? I gotta have a look to see what I got going in my plot from last year.

Pigweed is the major problem I have. It's best to spray it early otherwise it's tough to kill.
