Add sweet corn from our neighbor. Thielen’s bacon for BLT’s. Plus my wife’s pickled beets, two types of pickles, and jam.

Nothing like your own produce year round. Our beefsteak style tomatoes are finally getting ripe. We've had Better Boys for awhile, but they don't compare for fresh eating IMO. Hell of a year for green beans and peas here as well.

My wife and I decided many years ago.....that we could buy more and better produce from the grocery store than we could harvest from our garden. Plus.....we didn't give two shits for growing this stuff. I admire those that do.....we just never cared to do it. My mother-in-law had about 2 acres of garden that she expected everyone to help with....maybe that ruined our interests? We were also expected to cut up hogs and beef on a regular basis.....but had other jobs and stuff to do. Likely soured us on DIY farm produce? Lots of good produce available at fair prices locally......and we have other hobbies. Been a long time since we had a garden...... (dont flame me ). Everyone has different interests. . I had a neighbor here at the lake....he owned Butcher Boy Tomato company.....and I'm pretty sure that family did not own a garden. . I also know a family that owns a brewery....but they mostly drink wine. Different strokes for different folks? FORE!

Gardening sucks. Simple as that. All the time and money to try and grow stuff that ends up not producing much. Bla. We have an old feller down the road that is a gardening madman. He has fresh stuff for sale every day. A plate of 20 to 30 jalapenos is 1.50 bucks. Plate of tomatoes 1.50 bucks. Everything he sells is on a large plastic plate and everything is 1.50. Melons are .50 cents each I think. I cant grow anything for those prices and I get to go enjoy happy hour while he is planting, growing, weeding, fertilizing, picking and plating. I am happy with that. Fuck gardens.

We cut back from two gardens to one garden. That is just about right for what we eat. Two tomato plants for each of four varieties.
The amount of apple trees I have, we won’t discuss.

My wife's garden at her old place was huge. Here, our main garden is around 25'x30'. This soil is so much better than at her old place, we get more produce here than she did there. We also have a 20'x20' tomato/pepper garden. That one is covered with woven polypro landscape cloth. It helped control the blight for a few years, but I now have to spray the plants every week to 10 days. Probably time to pull up the cloth and start a new spot I suppose. For those who don't enjoy gardening, you probably shouldn't garden. I learned an awful lot about the outdoors, plants, soil, work ethics, mental toughness, and many other subjects while pulling weeds for hours (and hours) along side my Grandma when I was a kid.

My wife "wants" a garden every year.... She wants me to till it, plant it, weed it, take care of it and the like. Ummm.....NO! I explain to her it can't be "HER" garden....if I do all the work! She doesn't like the heat, bugs, snakes or getting dirty....so that means....NO GARDEN!
IF we ever do this sort of thing I will have to do the self watering containerized stuff. My wife struggles with the flowers as it is. First she waters to little...and then she tries to drown them and ends up cooking them! We buy them for mothers day (because that is what she wants) and typically they are dead as hell by labor day. I tried talking her into bulbs...but she wanted no part of that. So if killing petunias ever becomes a crime....my wife is in deep shit! Good thing animals and kids are more resilient....

Trailman and Dolgo applesauce. Here is a contrast of color and taste that you won’t find in the grocery store.

That looks good. And also time consuming - it must take a while to peel those little apples.
How much sugar do you put in for a standard batch of applesauce? Do you vary the sugar amount based on apple variety or keep it constant?
