My Dad wore through the keel on an aluminum boat from braking ice to duck hunt. He would bust it open and set decoys. We did that also. One person sits in the boat, the other person pushes the boat... the pusher leans far enough over the transom so that if the ice breaks he falls into the boat instead of into the lake. Sledge hammers and shovels to break ice and push the chunks on top. We also dumped buckets of paint on the ice to make it look like open water. Also cut keels off of decoys so that they would sit flat on the ice. Found out real quick that plastic draws solar heat and melts them into the ice during the day, then they freeze in their holes overnight. Impossible to get them back with completely destroying them.

Dad rammed the ice with an outboard on the back. He never used a duck call. Just his voice.

After skipping opener due to super crappy calm conditions, we made it to the field this morning. A good SE wind and the birds worked awesome, didn’t even circle. It was fast and furious with filling our limit of 25 by 7:15. There are a lot of people out hunting, I almost feel bad for the landowners getting pestered by so many people 😣

I freaking loved seeing that sign every time I drove up the driveway!
I’m pretty much down to only asking the landowners I personally know, the rest just turns into a circus.

That's a great hunt! How do you cook/eat them?

My Dad, Uncle, and young cousin with another neighbor. The picture was from the ‘40’s.

. My Dad was the youngest adult in the picture and that picture was in front of my Grandpa’s house. Somewhere this is a picture of a 22 pound northern with the eggs running out of her. That picture was taken BEHIND the house.. Not legal, but everyone involved is now gone. Game and fish was a large part of their diet.
