This is actually the first time I’ve sprayed buckthorn in the summer and it seems to be killing them hardcore. I don’t know if it is because they are so dry and just sucking up the chems or what, but putting a hurt on them in the last month.

No idea why

Since I am tagged out and the area I shot the buck was boogered up a bit anyway, I took some time today to kill off the handful of big buckthorn I could see while sitting in that stand. The areas I sprayed this summer are dead, dead so that was positive to confirm. Dead leaves, not berries.

How I've missed some of the buckthorn I've seen from stand the last couple days is beyond me. I've killed stuff all the way around, but missed clumps here and there.
I'm anxious for a week from tomorrow so I can get started on the eradication effort again.

Good news was that nothing small was around them. Perhaps that is where the phrase missing the forest through the trees phrase came from.

The 4 of us discussd this weekend. Need everyone on board to spend a day out there spraying crossbow...... yea,,,, a day wont do it, but if we focus around stands, it will help. our neighbors did a drive today. I couldnt even see them through the shit. Kind of dawned on me,,,,,, they cant see any or very few deer they kick up to alert posters. They never took a shot. So that was nice. I hate drives!

I am googling "pulling buckthorn", and not getting a straight answer... Can you pull buckthorn, and if some of the roots break off, is it now dead? or is a root fragment now the new "seed" to grow back. www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/terrestrialplants/woody/buckthorn/control.html#:~:text=If%20less%20than%203%2F8,if%20the%20soil%20is%20moist. It seems that in this page, pulling is an option, but it really makes no mention of "if you dont get enough roots". I take it pulling is effective then. The reason I want to pull some, is to get it out of view around stands from the start, rather than spray and go back and cut it off or pull it. And when I say pull it, I mean yanking 1 to 2+ inch diameter "trees" with an ATV and a tow strap. I found another page talking about cutting buckthorn for control,,, and the article makes no mention of you have to spray the stump if you dont want it to come back. :/

I'd like to say that if you get most of the roots, you'd likely kill the tree/bush, but that's just a guess. I've found dead buckthorn tips over pretty easily in year two and beyond. Seems like most of the dead stuff here ends up on the ground on its own

I just control a bit around the house. I like the cover.

Prickly ash here provides even thicker cover than buckthorn, but of course doesn't have green leaves this late in the fall.

The buckthorn war was re-opened today. I went through close to 2 gallons of diesel/Crossbow. I should have my NW 20ish acres "done" for the year. I'm sure I missed some in there somewhere, but it can't be that many. One good thing so far is that none of what I sprayed today were berry loaded females. I also sprayed whatever was growing around 3 wild crabs that I topworked this spring. I'm trying to create decent sized openings around them. All three had good takes from this spring's grafting. LPVFW crab, Munson Sweet, and Hayford Sweet all had 2-3' of growth on the grafted scions.
It felt good to get back to work in the woods for a few hours.
edit...I finished up mowing/blowing leaves off trails today, then grabbed the sprayer and went back to work. I really regret letting the buckthorn go as long as I did. I went through another gallon and a half or so. I darn sprayed something that I think is a crabapple. Of course, I didn't have my flagging tape along. Now I've gotta wade through the old hinges/brush and try to find the damn thing again so I can flag it and figure out what it is next year.
