I used to love fishing for smallies with top water lures...I should probably start fishing again at some point Smallmouth are spreading into more and more lakes from the Mississippi. And from the Rum/ Mille Lacs. Are they common in OTC?

I prefer spikes over wax worms. They stay on a lot better. The lake I fish is full of big smallies. They are a blast to catch through the ice but they reek havoc on your gear and set up. I had a school under me one day and I bet the took a half dozen jigs from me. I use 2-3# test line and some of those smallies are pushing 5 pounds. Unfortunately, you can’t keep them because the season is closed.

Can a guy even buy mousies anymore? Back when I icefished a lot, I always had all three...spikes, mousies, and waxies.

Very limited smallie in OTC Ottertail river is dynamite, but so much of it is unnavigable unless done via canoe. Almost no spots to even launch a small boat/motor if you wanted to. Hence why the river is so awesome. Only a handful of lakes have smallies. Clitherall, Pickerel, 10 mile, and a few more that I cant recall. Thats it out of the 1000+ lakes in the county.

Clitherall Lake is good for smallmouth. Minnewaska--where I live--is outstanding for smallies, you can catch dozens in a day if you know what you are doing.

I have not seen mousies in years. Loved using them on tough days, that little movement made a difference.

About six or 8 years ago, I caught the largest smallmouth basss out of Trout Lake on the Whitefish Chain. I took a pic and released it.....never considering I may have caught a state record. I still believe that fish would be among the tops ever. Talk about a fight.....I was sure I had a laker on the line.
Millelacs is loaded with smallies I have been told.

Struggling with the poles on the ponds so far. A few hybrid bluegills on my buddies pond and thats it. After Christmas, setting up a spear house. Super clear water

Is a spear house what it sounds like it is?
