I'm considering getting an electric smoker of some type. Does anyone have any suggestions of either what to get or what not to get? I know nothing about them. I smoked trout last year using my unheated grill as a smoker and it was great, but it was kind of a pain in the butt watching to make sure the wood chunks only smoked and didn't start flaming away. I'm thinking an electric smoker would be easier to work with
I would like it to smoke trout and possibly pork or hotdogs or things like that. Let me know what you guys recommend.

I like my green mountain grill. I am by no means a good authority on grills since I am terrible at smoking and grilling but everyone I know that has one loves it. greenmountaingrills.com

I started out with a Masterbuilt. It did well for what it was. That was 10+ years ago. I would guess they have them refined more by now. One thing I found is you must rotate the trays and rotate the meat on the trays. they have hot spots in them. But rotating trays has a down side because you let all your heat out for a couple minutes while doing it. So you have to catch up again and the electric is slower to recover. when I did summer sausage or fish, if you leave everything in place, one part of the smoker will ahve product that is done, while other parts are far from done. When mine burned out, I went to the pellet grill smoker and boy I am happy with that. Wish it would have burned out sooner. www.masterbuilt.com/collections/smokers?gclid=CjwKCAjwvZv0BRA8EiwAD9T2VR8e-alkA0eO57mit3T2RQPGxxhAM-7NwhogWpS3-cbBQ2RpfGZgWhoC63gQAvD_BwE

I have a 10 year old masterbuilt that I just had a heating element go out on. It works well but as stated above, it has hot and cold spots. The new ones do look like an approved upon design. The bradleys are great fir smoking lower temps but cost more in the long haal due to needing to buy the wood pucks they require versus loose chips.

I've got a green mountain portable. Runs on 110 AC or 24 DC. I really like it.

I've got a bradley and have modified it so it's a lot better. I added a bigger heating element so it recovers quicker, put in a circulation fan so there's no hot spots, and bought a holder so I can use pellets instead of the pucks.
It works slick now without having to move meats around while cooking and heats up without waiting. I like it.
