It maybe ugly now but hidden somewhere in there is a beautiful knife handle. Ok, you have to make a video or a tutorial of how you pull a knife handle out of that mess!

It's a burl of some sort, I positive it's maple. It was found so I have no idea where it came from. I'll post up some pics or videos when I get to cutting it up. I'd like to get more than one handle from it so I'm really going to study it before the first cut.

I see burls on black cherry trees fairly often, I wonder if they are ever used for projects like yours.

What sort of wizardry is this? Nature creates it I just have to bring it out.

What sort of wizardry is this? Nature creates it I just have to bring it out. I had a birch burl in the shed for two decades and gave it to a friend, two springs back. I had it pealed.

Well I've been thinking about it for some time and finally pulled the trigger. I ordered a heat treat oven (kiln). This will be a game changer for all blades but especially for Stainless blades. Can't wait to get it and put it to work.

Yesterday the mail man pulled in the driveway. He had a big box that I had an idea of what was inside. It was some black birch from Carl. I couldn't wait to sand one down to see what it looked like. I sanded to 400 grit and put a little linseed oil in one spot and tung oil in another. It's going to make some nice knife handles. Thanks again Carl.

I like to experiment with different woods and stains/ finishes. I like wood grain in my decorative fish decoys.
