I helped a friend put in his first foodplot this year. He hadn’t been back to check on it and texted me last night. He thought it would be a bust as we haven’t had any rain since he planted it on June 13. We got rain yesterday. I told him to check k it today and see. I told him that buckwheat is pretty fool proof if it gets ground contact. His buddy tillled and groomed the plot nicely. I got a happy text text this morning. We will throw and mow clover and winter rye in late July. Maybe add a little turnips to the mix. So I’m on the disabled list. He’s going to spread the clover, winter rye, and a pound of brassicas. Then mow it. The issue is he has no mower except his regular push mower. Could he get by with spreading the seed and setting his push mower up to the highest setting and then mow it? Or will it keep clumping and stalling the mower? He had said he’d rent a DR but, I was looking for other alternatives. Thoughts???

The buckwheat I used to grow would be impossible to mow with a regular push mower

The buckwheat I used to grow would be impossible to mow with a regular push mower That’s what I thought. Well I’ll find out how his plot is growing. We had 3” rain last week and then 90s so I imagine it’s growing fast and tall. I believe the guy that helped till that plot may have a mower as well. I don’t feel comfortable lending mine out. I’d do it for him but, I’ll be recovering.

Buckwheat instead of oats for me next Spring! Variety is the spice of life. The goals of my Spring planting are weed suppression, thatch for a late Summer planting and nutrient cycling. Should I mix Buckwheat and Oats? Or, should I just pile Buckwheat deep and watch it go? Add some annual clover? This year was Oats, Fixation and Berseem. It seemed to be doing OK a month ago when I was there. Sure wish I had a camera on it about now.

If you join team blower, you might get a ziplock of flax to throw down too.

If I want to spray, I can nuke the world with a hot mix of gly and 2,4-d and still plant the same day. Buckwheat will force my hand. This year, I haven't sprayed at all so it would have been the year to try it. We will see what weeds I have when I go up next.

Oh - and "Team Blower".... you might want to fire your marketing department.

I wouldn’t put anything in with the buckwheat for a spring planting. It is pretty dense and grows fast. I do save some buckwheat to throw in my fall planting. It dies first frost but the deer here love it so they get an extra month of it while everything else grows for the fall.

Now that's a nice looking sea of Buckwheat! Any browse on it? I’m not sure. That’s my friends plot that I’ve got to figure out how to get clover and winter rye spread into and mowed. He definitely needs a lot more trees down on that right side. That’s east.
