Now that's a nice looking sea of Buckwheat! Any browse on it? I’m not sure. That’s my friends plot that I’ve got to figure out how to get clover and winter rye spread into and mowed. He definitely needs a lot more trees down on that right side. That’s east. That looks pretty darn good. It shouldn't take more than a throw and mow should it?

I’ll follow up and see if the guy that did the Tilling can mow it.

If that were me, I would wait a while longer, but you know the timing in that area to get the clover established and for the brassicas to mature, so use your best judgement on that. If you wait a bit yet, that BW will have time for the seed to mature, and for the plant to die a bit more. Once that happens, you just throw and roll. You can roll down that BW with just about anything that has wheels, and it will ensure the new seeds all get ground contact. And, you get more free buckwheat for fall food.

He does have two sons though. One that hunts.

That’s what I was wondering too. He doesn’t have an atv but, the tractor got in there. Maybe he roll it with his truck.

Mine was just starting to flower when I mowed it Sunday, but I left some around the edges. My timing was perfect we have had rain 5 days in a row and calling for rain almost everyday in the 10 day. If I can time the fertilizer right I might have some nice brassicas.

That looks nice. So you included radishes in your spring buckwheat planting?
I've never tried planting them in the spring, but I'm sure they are good in any cover crop mix.

Yeah I was hoping to have the radish bolt and produce flowers/seed sort of like in the video below. Theory was get dual use as pollinator attractant/bugging area for pheasants/turkeys, then have seed for them to eat in the fall. Just didnt get them in early enough I guess.

I went to my friend’s buckwheat plot this morning. Deer had been browsing it a lot. He’s going to brush mow it next Thursday. I gave him a few pounds of brassicas to spread. He will also spread winter rye and clover. I told him to spread a bag of 19-19-19 too. He’s also got 400 pounds of lime. I think he could’ve mowed it with a push mower set up high but, I guess he didn’t have one so he’s paying somebody to come do it.

I've spent some time trying to convince myself to go do plot work for people who are unable or unwilling to do it for themselves. I think I could stay busier (and make a pretty fair sum) than I'd ever want to be, but I just don't have the drive anymore.
