Full time in Zona in your future? I’ll be a resident but won’t live there year round. Where we spend our summers is still to be determined. Right about now I’m in the less is more camp. Currently work and to many other responsibilities is consuming all our time. We need to simplify our lives for certain. Will OZ turn full time for you? I have gone 180 degrees now from being on the go to its now time to settle down and start doing more shit the wife and I want to do. If it wasn't for her, this would never have happened. I have started getting rid of shit I have accumulated over the last 60 years, but figure it will take me 2 years to get most of it gone. My quest is to be an AZ resident with a home in the Valley and one up north in hunting country. Can't wait to get out there in Nov and get my house remodeled, landscape in and start doing shit we like.

Unfortunately we are in a tough spot with parents. My parents have been no issues at all, none at (92 and 89). My wife's mom (82) is a huge burden particularly the last year or so. She started having dementia a couple of years ago and 12 months ago she quit driving. My wife has an incredibly long fuse but some things are gonna have to change with my two MIA BIL's. If not mom has to go to assisted living as we will not be on the hook for everything. There are some tough discussions that will occur as soon as my wife gets fed up enough, hopefully very soon. In the meantime we dream of Arizona and getting away.

My buddy just went through 2 years of taking care of his dementia stricken mother in law with his wife, then 8 more years of her in the lock down dementia ward at the assisted living at a cost of $6-7K per month. Biggest mistake was his wife being the executor of the estate and power of attorney. They did everything for this lady and when she finally passed got sued by all her brothers and sisters accusing my buddies wife of stealing all the moms money they thought they were entitled too. She was worth over a million before she went into the rest home, broke from all the costs when she died. So the fucking family all lawyered up and sued. Its still going to court 2 years later. Get shit figured out way ahead of time Jerry, trust me!

^ Sounds quite familiar. BTDT. Glad I won't relive those times. We are simplifying our lives and hope to not do this to our kids. Takes allot of planning.

My buddies wife has every cancelled check and slip for everything spent for the lady. She was smart.

Worse part of my buddies deal was there was a health care directive, will, power of attorney and executor of the estate named well before it all started. Still is going to court. Crazy shit.

A little off topic; but you guys who are retiring and jumping ship to other states... was this always your plan or did you change your mind at some point? I ask because my lifelong goal was to move out of town and live out retirement in the country. I'm working closer and closer to that and see absolutely no chance of even considering changing my mind. Any of you guys that are switching things up used to feel like I do?

Any of you guys that are switching things up used to feel like I do? I never dreamed that I would be a resident of OZ. We built this house up here at the lake to die in......but came to realize that the winters are too long in MN......and one can only do so much ice fishing and tv watching. We thought we may spend 3 months in FL or OZ.......but now spend over six......and that may increase over time. One thing we realized even before our build at the lake is that we did not want to drive 45 minutes to get groceries, go to eat, go to doctors or dentists and such. We built this home in a good location with 10 minutes proximity to the Brainerd area - which has 90% of all that is needed. Same goes for OZ....10 min's to anything. I think many folks ideas evolve with age and the experiences you get from traveling and seeing other life styles. Also, with parents and family gone....less to tie you to the "old life". My .02 cents.

Thanks Foggy. I didn't think of the driving thing. We've just always assumed an hour of drive time is a part of life.

Mowing the lawn twice a week with weed whipping takes 6 hours a day. Plowing snow is worse. Buildings are all 25 years old and will need updating, house included. I would have trouble renting out the ground watching someone else do it. Everyday we walk out the door its work staring you in the face. Wife has had enough and I don't blame her. Time for someone else to enjoy this place the way we have.

Realizing most things are just items is a good perspective. I like you Arizona idea, the mountains would be nice.

That can only happen if we sell this place.

When you get into your mid-seventies.......and you got a few health issues......and it's 90 degrees outside and humid.......about the last thing I want to deal with is a fracking lawn mower. Conversely when it's -10 degrees and snowing......I dont want to deal with a snow blower or a shovel. FORE!
