Not sure Im pretty sure Im this sites biggest construction idiot, but I believe its the way the walls are constructed. posts vs regular framed walls?

What will you use for heating the floor, a boiler system run off of propane or will you be able to use natural gas?

My BIL up in Merrifield has a patio home on a slab. He always worries about a tornado......and after going through a tornado.....I would worry a bit too.
I always tell him to bolt a seatbelt to the floor and when a storm comes to belt himself down and enjoy the view......at least I'd know where to find him......GRIN.
I think doing a block wall room in ht middle of the house with good rebars and some of the cores filled would do pretty well against most storms. May have to get some good specs from the inter webs?

That's what I have, though I'm not sure if any of the cores are filled or not. It does have a poured cap. Not quite the middle of the house, but not on an outside wall either.

I was too cheap to go with poured haven't thought about that yet if the money is there im guessing poured would be better My G.C. showed me the numbers of poured vs. block both price wise and force withstood. Ya, poured will withstand greater force. It was also almost twice the cost if I recall correctly. If I had little kids, I probably would have ponied up for the poured version.

Slab VS Basement.
I spoke with a builder in Milbank a year ago about house options. He said if it was his money he’d put in a full basement every time. His rational was since they have to dig so deep to put the perimeter of the foundation in anyway, it wouldn’t cost much more to do a full basement.
Was he full of shit? I just sort of took his word for it and decided to have a good hard look at both options when the time came.

Contractor finished the upstairs and I'm finishing the downstairs. Got to move in turn-key and saved on interest as we aren't putting any of the basement finish on loan. Paying out of pocket as we go. The way I figured it is cheap square footage.

Smaller footprint for the same usable square footage. Also, a place for my dungeon.
