I’ve put tubes/cages on native oaks that were just getting started! It works very well. I supposed they have a deep root and just need some protection! I put a tube on this one 3 years ago and it has blown up since.

I watered all of the oaks today. 20 of the 25 had good leaf out. 4 had buds starting to open and 1 might not have made it. I opened up around them to make sure they were getting good sun as well. Damn dry up here

That’s good survival! I had one established SBO die on me, but it was my fault . The tube was too short and they ate the top off it this winter !

The kelly SBO that I have checked on all look good and leafed out. 1 looks like it's getting munched on by bugs pretty good already. I've only got 7 at home and none are in perfect full sun but in open spots in the woods. Haven't been able to check on the ones at the land in wetter ground for a couple weeks but they were leafing out when I was last there.
What do you guy typically see for 1st season growth on these seedlings? much of anything or is it pretty limited to the existing dormant buds leafing out the first year?

Good first year growth ! In the right conditions and if you “baby” them... They grow pretty fast !

I watered the oaks again today. Pumped to see 4 of the stragglers now have leaves opened. 24 look great and only 1 looks like a lost soul. When I was watering the last one I kicked up a fawn that I had no idea was there. Little bugger took off in a flash and disappeared again.

I need to tube and water mine this coming weekend. I planted them 2 weeks ago along sloughs.... so they should be ok for now.

Are you guys weed matting them too? I got weed mats and tubes on all mine in the poorly drained fields on my land but just have tubes and mulched buckthorn around the ones at home.
Trying to keep competition down so these suckers can grow as fast as possible.

Watered the oaks again today and the one I thought was a goner had opened up a few small leaves and green buds. I had kept watering it and it must have just been a little slow to wake up. That makes 25 for 25 then.

$80 for a food grade 275 gallon time saver. I might be watering all summer.
