Anyone have any alternative ideas for fence posts to secure the cement wire to its location. I am gonna need some but I don't feel like dropping $5-$7 per post, i'm always on the hunt for a deal and I don't see any existing potential good news on craigslist.

Tent stakes.
I use 1 t-post and 1 tent stake per cage. Could probably get away with using 2 tent stakes, but I like to use a t-post to hold the ends of the wire together. I don't fold the wire over itself as I want to be able to easily open the cages to get inside for maintenance.
I watch sale flyers for TSC, Fleet Farm, Fleet Supply, etc. for sales on t-posts. When they go on sale, I go buy a few bundles of them.

I've not priced re-bar (like used in concrete). But I think this could be one alternative to check out. I'd think some HD Rebar would work for cages and tree stakes etc. Getting hard to find fence posts at a fair price for sure.

Local cement factory quoted me $7 per 20' stick (.5in) earlier this week.
I'm fond of hedge posts when I'm feeling tight on cash.

I don't even use them anymore with my cages. I did use 1/2" 10' emt for under $2. Cut them into for 2 stakes.

I use the rebar fence posts with the triangle foot rest for stepping them in. Put them in upside down and use the foot thing to pull the cage tight to the ground. $1.50/ea at the farm store.

Doesnt it take just 1 pissed off deer? Bear are more of a problem. They tip over one or two a year but, they do it if they're staked too.

Doesnt it take just 1 pissed off deer? I've got to take that back. I did have a cage knocked over last yr. Tore up a mulberry tree. Even ripped the window screen off of it.

I had an unstaked cage blow over two days ago. I'd guess that in areas where the wind isn't so crazy, a guy could get away without staking cement wire cages for the most part. In high DPSM areas, I think you'll find deer will push the cages around though.
