It’s January 13th. No sub zero temps in the 10 day forecast. I’m thinking I might start pruning in 2 weeks. When are you guys planning to start pruning?

There are so many different ways to train/prune fruit trees. Eliminate dead wood, cut out crossing branches, remove watersprouts (growth going straight up off the limbs) and you'll be fine.

Yep.... that should about do it, especially for a wildlife tree. All of my trees in the orchard at my Grandmas were trained with the central leader technique. Now that I have a few of those trees at my house, they will be converted to open center or modified open center. Just easier to pick apples that way i suppose. Not for the ¨wildlife¨ anymore.

Walked by a pear tree this weekend that had 2 big main leaders. I prune these things every year and can't believe I've missed such a obvious no-no. It's so bad that the side I'm keeping is tilted to the north and has no branches on the south. How do I miss these things?!? Fuukin biden!

Typically, do you guys get a lot of sub zero weather in February? I think I’m going to go for it next weekend if nothing is in the 10 day forecast.

I don’t know why but down here it seems we get our coldest weather in February. So far this winter has been very mild. The duck hunting sux.
I’d be patient on pruning. My bet is Mother Nature is going to bitch slap us.

January is typically our coldest month but, we have larger snowfalls in February and March. I’ll watch the extended forecast and see if the polar vortex switches. I may wait until the last weekend in January or first in February. I’ve got 150 trees to do so a weekend or two helps. Either way I’ll be in the woods working.

Few years ago I pruned March 1st. It was zero degrees. I like to wait til the snow is gone so I can get all the damn little suckers and branches that always seem to pop up near the bottom or thru the window screen. So sometime in March.

If a major pruning was needed, is there a number like no more than 30% ?

If a major pruning was needed, is there a number like no more than 30% ? Welcome to the forum. Yes, there is a general rule to not remove more than a third of growth in a given year.
