If a major pruning was needed, is there a number like no more than 30% ? Welcome! We need a few more apple guys on here. What varieties are you growing?

You guys post that early spring is when to prune because of cold. What temp exactly do you want to avoid. What's cold to you guys is never seen here. We go back and forth a lot. Comfortable couple of weeks in the 50's can be had right now, but a week of single digits could happen in early March.

My opinion on it is that we are just trying to prune as close to the time growth starts as reasonably possible. Limit the amount of time with open wood to as little as possible.

I may have pruned a little hard in the past....

Below zero temps is what I try to avoid. 0 or a few degrees below probably wouldn't be problematic, but -20 on new wounds (pruning leaves tissue exposed) could lead to tree damage or even death. I'd imagine you could prune any time of the year in KS

Growth = tree If you prune more than a third of a tree you might kill it. The other problem with excessive pruning is that it can stimulate a lot of growth...which leads to a lot more pruning

My Smitty's tree throws watersprouts like crazy. I don't know why, I really don't prune it much...except for removing the watersprouts anyway. I did train it to have pretty horizontal limbs, I think that must be at least part of the reason.

Fruit load and pruning has done that for me. Please save me some scion.

I’m not sure the variety, but it was not maintained in the past. I’m a beginner, I don’t own any hunting land yet. But this stuff interests me. And I helps drive me towards goal. I do have some places I hope to put some trees though.

You can’t always trust the weather apps either. It’s 2 this morning and my weather Wunderground app says it’s supposed be a forecasted low of 23 degrees. Not sure how they can be that far off with today’s technology. I’ll carry my 8’ ladder back into my main orchard Saturday and hold off pruning for another week or two. I’ll work on clearing around oaks instead

Can anyone spare a few scion sticks of crab apple and pear. The apple would need to be CAR resistant. I’m ready to take the plunge and try grafting some of my non producing wild crabs. I’d reimburse for the effort.

I’d reimburse for the effort. I can send you some crab and pear scions, but the varieties of pear I have available scions from (Ure, Early Gold, Golden Spice) aren't known for awesome eating.
