Can anyone spare a few scion sticks of crab apple and pear. The apple would need to be CAR resistant. I’m ready to take the plunge and try grafting some of my non producing wild crabs. I’d reimburse for the effort. Are you looking for edible crabs, late dropping crabs for winter feeding, or crabs for deer hunting? What works at certain times for us, might not have the same timing as in our climate. I have a good test area for CAR resistance.

I’m not big on eating pears anyway. Anything is better than a Bradford that will eventually spread a million more Bradford

Bradford is simply a named cultivar of callery pear. Callery pear used to be sold as a pear rootstock...so pretty much any European or European/Ussurian pear cultivar can be grafted to it.

Deer hunting apples seems like a good start. I have a really large crab that hasn’t set fruit in 2 years. It gets CAR really bad. It seems to die a little each year. Someone here said I should graft it a year to 2 ago but it seemed crazy to cut on this big tree. I now realize u need to change it to save it. I’ve been watching the grafting videos and I now think I can take a shot at it. I have a couple smaller crabs in the woods that seem to be in the same CAR situation.

Put together some scions for Reagan and I'll add a few, no sense paying postage twice

Reagan, when do fruit trees in your area start "waking up"? If you're top working trees, you want them to be leafing out. A guy can graft most anytime in the spring, but the general recommendation for top working trees in the field is to wait for the targeted trees to have leaves the size of a mouse's ear.

I’d say mid April. But this is a mild winter so it may be earlier.

Looks like there some near zero degree weather in my 10 day forecast so I won’t be pruning next weekend. I’ll get my 8’ ladder out to my orchard though so it’s ready when it’s time.

Looks like some of the coldest weather of the winter so far in about a week. Probably a good idea to put off major pruning until the polar vortex goes back to Canada where it belongs.

Yeah, I'd commented in another thread that I now remember the coldest day I've seen in the last 40 years was -37 around 18 years ago on February 16th. We've had some mild winters the last 10 years or so and had forgotten that. No biggie. I'll be running the chainsaw instead.

The brutal cold appears to be abating after today/tomorrow. Perhaps almost time to start pruning...
