It's getting to be time to get some instruments out to the land to better understand where my elevations are. I've been doing some reading and researching on lazer levels, and I've got the basic understanding of how they work. Now I'm trying to decide if I rent one, buy one, or try to find somebody that's got one and rent it from them. Sunbelt has one for rent, but it's $100/day, and I'd have it at least three days. I'll call my guy in GR and see if they rent on, and maybe I can get that down to one day. Amazon has an 800' range kit with very high reviews that could be had for $450.
I'd like to get this done right around the time the snow melts so there's as little obstruction as possible in the woods. Anyone have any words of wisdom for this kind of work? I've got some pretty good spots for line of sight already, so I'm hoping it's a worthwhile way to spend a day.

Bring lathe and stake it as you’re out there. My guess without knowing exactly what you’re trying to accomplish is that you’re going to have line of sight issues and will end up being a frustrating and time consuming project

We charge about that for our level.
Are you renting from some place that is far enough away that you couldn’t return it after a day?
Are you combining this with dirt weekend or just looking to see if point A is higher than point B?

If I had a level I could get up 6-7', that'd help a lot. I think it's flat enough that I could just knock down a bunch of brush in an hour and make it happen. The stem count isn't high where I've gotta go. It'd be all tag alder/ash lowland, at least where I'd need to clear. I'm trying to understand the contour of my property. I want to know where it's high and low, and where the little watersheds are. If I had to guess, I think there's more elevation change than I think, I've just got bowls all over that used to connect, but have been f'd up by the logging ruts.

Old school long clear hose and water. My old school long clear hose and water guy told me to do that. The way this is looking, that may not be a bad idea.

Are you combining this with dirt weekend or just looking to see if point A is higher than point B? I wanna get this done this spring before anything happens. I'd like to take one of my aerial maps and plot all the points I measure and then mark flow if there is any. I'll call into the guys in GR and see if they have one. That could be a day rental.

Find a local contractor. He maybe willing to help you out or one of his guys for cash on a weekend. Any contractor who does grade work should be set with what you need.

What about craigslist or marketplace? Does it have to be a lazer, could optical work? Can you buy a old surveyor tripod and transit and make it work? Can you get much of a line-of-site with all the trees you have up there?

Sounds like a good reason to get some bikini clad noodling woman up there to help. I can picture it now... sd, AOC in a sports bra and cutoff jean shorts, and a uppity cat running around the forest with sticky hats for the bugs and a 6 pack of moose drool.

What's the goal of the laser leveling operation? Are you trying to contour the whole property so it drains towards the future new pond?
