I know I shouldn't be looking for a new dog yet (kind of like shopping when you're hungry), but I'm researching... So like the title says; Was your best pup a mutt or a breed? Did it do what you wanted and intended the dog to do, or did you just mesh well?
I want something that retrieves and likes water. Is an outside dog (I don't do well with inside animals). Can sniff out a quail and a shed antler. I figure most dogs can fit the bill but my last one (a basset hound) did pretty much none of those things. Loved the dog but she was solely a companion and not a worker.
I'm looking at several breeds but I'm discovering that dogs are damn expensive. More expensive than I'll pay. They are an investment though. Most dogs I've had lived over 12yrs. That's a long time to wish you had something that would sniff out a quail but doesn't.

English labs. Have 2 now. Adorable. Obedient. Energetic when I ask them to be.
10 and 8 years old. Considering a pup to learn from them but dang.. 3 dogs?

Thanks biglake, the English lab wasn't even on my radar. Now it is.

I'm a fan of first generation mutts. Seems you get many of the best traits of the purebread parents, less of the bad health junk, while being way cheaper.
And English labs are awesome.

I will get a pic of them when they are done exploring. They are out enjoying dog life and no concerns by me. They do what they do.

My golden is the best dog I have ever had. Super smart. He is birdy which is rare for this breed but he comes from a line of hunters. I haven’t hunted with him much. Our duck killing has been slow except for last year and he was battling cancer then. I love his calm demeanor. He will lay at my feet and be super chill when needed. He will retrieve like a maniac when needed. He sleeps with my daughter most nights. He doesn’t bark when someone comes to the door. I don’t know why but I like that. Happy dogs annoy me. But if I get into a wrestling match with my daughter he will growl and get nasty. If someone broke into my house I’m sure he would fuck them up. I wouldn’t think of not having him in our house. He is family. One negative is his coat. He picks up burs and ice will stick to his coat. But he doesn’t shed as much as my old lab.

When you look at what a dog cost over it’s life time, the purchase price doesn’t mean shit. Food, vet bills, trading time all add up much more.

Have you thought about getting one that can also do research, tell jokes, pick stocks, and take the lead on habitat projects on your place?

I woke up to my daughters cat puking under my bed this morning.
Nuff said.

My parents have short hairs. My sister has a lab. The short hairs are fun for upland bird hunting. My sisters lab isn’t much of a hunter.
