the sod will take more than a disc unless you have a huge disc with fold up gangs to give it a lot of weight.... i would think. I just know the sod i have cut over the years with smaller stuff was a chore-and-a-half unless we used the mold board plow. Even after that it was a number of passes with the disc to have a field to plant. My idea was to have it sprayed, wait a couple weeks, disc it, see how it looks, plant if it looks good or spray again in a few weeks/ month, disc, then plant into brassicas/whatever... 25 acres is a ton of discing. You may want to get a quote for spraying and plowing/discing.

Have you developed a plantable food plot in old sod? I assume so from youre previous places. If not, Sod layer can be MIGHTY thick depending how long its not been farmed. hey, you have that 3 bottom plow you bought from my Dad right?? I've had good success killing grasses with roundup then discing afterwards. I'm not a real big fan of plowing much anymore. you still have to deal with pulling the grass clumps out after plowing when discing. Once the grass browns down after spraying its a lot easier to deal with.

I've got a nice 14' disc and tractor to pull it so discing isn't the problem. I just don't like messing with plows or plowed fields.

Aggressive! I like it, that's a ton of plots. I would call and ask for a quote for sure, especially if your time is important to you.
Would it be an option to hire it sprayed, disc a burn-barrier around the perimeter, then burn the dead grass? Getting rid of the residue makes the discing and drilling much easier.

Ya got me thinking; is this 25 acres going to be a solid plot, or are you going to divide it up into shaped sections? Going to leave any strips of grass in it for cover and to break up the area?

I was just gonna leave it all solid plots. It's 2 fields. 1 around 5 acres the other close to 20. I enclosed the 2 areas on the pic. I may changeover to some barriers but for now want to keep it simple and clear out the grass.

That'd be a heck of a long ride spraying on an ATV. If you lived there, and were retired, that'd be one thing. But my ass hurts just thinking about 25 acres on my ATV.

Do you know what's under the grass? Around here, the only fields that are left in grass are those that are nearly pure rock when you work them up

That's another reason why I'm shying away from plowing.

Are there rock piles on the field edges? Thats an easy indicator what you might have.
We have rock piles galore, and how the hell we still pick rocks BLOWS MY MIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's 2 holes dug out in the middle of the field that have rocks in them. Nothing on the sides that I've seen. I'm sure there's plenty to dig up, lol.

25 acres! I love it!
But not one vote for throw and mow? I'd think a mid summer spraying followed by a throw and mow brassica blend and 250 lbs of AMS/ac would have all that grass gone by spring and not a single rock pulled up. Imagine how big of a flail mower you could get! You'd be at the auctions with the big guys.

I'd pay someone to spray that much. I use my atv to spray about 12 acres and it is a sucky 4 hour job.
My first year here the guy renting my land couldn't plant it because it was wet, so I planted it all for the deer. It is pretty crazy how much food you can get off 10 acres, so 25 is crazy. You will have most of the deer in your area using your place.
Beans and brassicas are hard to beat, but with that much acreage it would be a great time to try planting a little of everything.

Yup I’d go crazy with experimenting. Clover Brassica Cereals Pumpkins Corn Beans W/e crazy things cats plant.

I'll have to pay my cousin to come down, spray if needed, disc then plant brassicas late summer. If i were here full time I'd experiment more with throw and mow.
