I'd pay someone to spray that much. I use my atv to spray about 12 acres and it is a sucky 4 hour job. My first year here the guy renting my land couldn't plant it because it was wet, so I planted it all for the deer. It is pretty crazy how much food you can get off 10 acres, so 25 is crazy. You will have most of the deer in your area using your place. Beans and brassicas are hard to beat, but with that much acreage it would be a great time to try planting a little of everything. I've sprayed around 14 with my atv as well. Not a fun job.

When I planted my whole place I tried a little of everything. The field peas and oats combo was a good blend that was hit hard by deer and turkeys. If I did it again I would throw in some sunflowers somewhere as well.
Buckwheat is also something I would plant with that much acreage. It grows great, smothers weeds and takes browsing pressure off other plants. It produces quite a bit of seed too that critters eat later in the fall.

Yup I’d go crazy with experimenting. W/e crazy things cats plant. You don't want my crazy cocktail for this.

Wade, do you need someone to pull soil samples? If you are dealing with a coop, get it done.
I think you are west of the line where everything needs lime. Over here, everything needs lime. Best to work it in.

If you don't want to lease it to a farmer I like having idea of beans via no till planting too. Then I'd create a strategic layout of a smaller plot or plots with the rest in switch grass/thermal cover planted spring 2022.

Wade, have you considered just spraying some and leaving it or just a light disking?
You might grow noxious weeds, or natural forbs for a free foodplot.

"Old field habitat" appears to be one of the new buzz words with habitat guys. My cow yard was partially sprayed and then disked last summer. It has far better cover than the prairie grasses I see around here. Some big leafed weed, I mean forb, was over 6 feet tall.

If I had 25 acres of grass field, I'd turn the vast majority into weeds/grass/saplings/whatever shows up after spraying the grass and keep 3-5 acres for foodplots. I do understand why Wade wants 25 acres of food though, should be some fantastic late season hunting.

I am surprised gypsum hasnt been recommended. Wasn’t a good way to steer the topic towards gypsum.

You have deer food late in the year and after crop harvest and you have the deer. Found that out at my old place.
