I much prefer side rails over open bed for hauling gear..... I had a near disaster once. My John Deere lawn tractor was on my snowmobile trailer. I had 4 ratchet straps(One off each corner). Got to the Osakis exit on 94, and was on the exit ramp turning onto the road headed to Osakis.... I looked in the mirror as I turned and noticed the tractor looked odd. Got out and checked, the damn tractor was loose and had rolled forward, and was only saved from going off the front of the trailer by the spare tire I have mounted on the tongue of the trailer. Agree that side rails are nice to have. I need a small equipment trailer for hauling my tractor and equipment and just have not purchased one yet. So far I have gotten by with my snowmobile, utility and ATV trailer but I have not had to take my tractor in for any service yet. So far I have done all the service on my equipment myself.

I always figured trailering a tractor equaled chain and load binders? lawn tractor When I was about 18 years old......I was hauling a field ready big tractor back to the farmer after doing some service on it at my dad's shop. It was cold so I left the diesel tractor run and had the tractor in neutral. We would put a chain over the drag links on the tractor and secured the winch hook from implement truck bed to front tractor axel ....to cinch the tractor tight. Quick and easy.....did it all the time. As I was driving I saw the chains (in the rear view mirrors) getting a bit loose which didn't happen very often. As I only had a few miles left to go.....I thought I would be OK to get to the farmers place.....as I kept an eye on those chains. Went over some bumps and saw the chain hook come loose and the tractor started to roll a bit. Slowed and speeded up gradually to keep the tractor from rolling off the truck bed. Re-tightened the affair.....lit up a smoke......and drove another mile or so to the destination. Dodged another bullet. Mission accomplished. .
