Would that blower attachment allow brassica to "penetrate" the ground if you pointed it at the sand on my place? Then I could plant in the bean / corn rows. I gotta find a way to get brassica or rye / oats, in the bean rows covered with dirt. On my sandy soils....those broadcast seed dont "take" without some good soil contact. What we need is something similar to that green seed/material mix they spray to repair patches in grass. Maybe a mix of seed and sawdust so when the seed hits the ground its covered? Its probably not viable but we need some way to transport the seed to the ground and cover it. Either that or an irrigation system.

Rye doesn't even grow when broadcasted? I thought rye grew in truck beds...

Big big weekend on tap, lots going on. Here's a rundown of what I'm shooting for. Deep down, I hope I don't get it all done.
Get minnow traps out again in some new spots Check cams (got two out now) Look for life in plots (flax, barley, collards, clover, rye) Move more rock along cabin Try to borrow neighbors skid steer to move remaining rock to different spot Make spot for another 10-yard load of wood chips Change oil in wheeler Mop cabin floor for the first time Start laying fabric and mulch down on road spruces and yard dogwoods Check hoog progress
I stopped into menards yesterday. They were out of the good cedar chip mulch they sell. That stuff was $3/bag last year. Now it's $5.25 and they don't even have any. I've been looking at the stuff I wanna mulch, and it quickly became apparent I should just get another truckload. So I gotta get my rock moved so I can make the call to my mulch guy to bring a truckload over. Also need to get serious about some kind of trailer for the wheeler.

With a little luck on the timing you might be able to score a couple free loads of wood chips if you talk to the right guy clearing power line right of ways. I picked up 2 big loads for free when i talked to the crew trimming the power lines in my neighborhood. In hindsight I probably should have told him there will be a case of beer waiting for every load delivered. I probably would have ended up with a lifetime supply of wood chips for a few cases of Busch light, but I'm happy with what I got for free.

I still ended up paying something, but it was still a good deal. Right now, the ditches from Remer to Walker are full of wood chips. They did a major trimming back of the woods, and those wood chips look like they're a foot or two deep in some places. I am wondering if they'll ever pick them up, or just leave them there?

I asked for a load of chips about three weeks ago as they were working on the lines up to my house. None have arrived yet and they finished our lines.
I also asked where the chips would come from and he said from within our county . EAB has been identified here yet, but he says they have had concerns about it.
Perhaps that is why they don’t move many chips anymore.

A logger once told me that chipping wood kills EAB. So his chips were safe.
I also got the impression he was a crook so I wouldn’t bank on his statement.

When they logged my place....they chipped most of the slash and limbs. I was told they shipped the trailer loads of chips to Duluth to be burned for power production. I sold a good number of trailer loads and it did put some money in my pockets. I wish I had considered having a load of chips piled up for future use.

They just let those road ditch chip piles rot around here and by my cabin. I scooped some up out of a ditch by my cabin to put around my apple trees.

Today I will be hauling load number 4 (5?) away. Some went to the dump, some to the recycling center, and this load to the township clean up day. Hopefully this load is free.

I'm heading to tractor supply today to pick up some hog panels. We are planning on getting a few hogs this year and I've been told hog panels are the way to go. We will see how that works.
Hopefully after that trip I'll spread some wood chips and maybe a little lime.

When you walk into his yard pigs come running up to you, circle your feet a couple of times, then kick and run off to play. They're like dogs. Even kennel themselves before dark. No panels needed.
