This pic is about 10+ days ago . Common Wild Apple plug from U of Idaho . I let them go wild. Do you guys prune or trim the wild apple or crabapple trees? Lately, I have been pruning trees I plant. Years back, I just planted them and fenced them.

The older wild trees here I've pretty much left alone. I do remove dead limbs when I can. I planted 10 of the wild apple plugs from U of ID this spring. I haven't decided yet if I'll graft them all over to something else in the future or if I'll let a few grow as they are. edit....^^^ that's if they survive this drought. I'm not going to water them.

Well, looks like about half of this year's are dead. A couple of last year's that I field grafted are also struggling. I've got 10 year old blue spruces drooping on light soil (they weren't supposed to be blue spruces). Not sure how the drought monitor isn't worse than it currently shows.

I am still watering the 13 trees I planted this spring. They get water every 3-4 days. If the pond goes dry, two trees will be on their own.

I think I have 3 of 10 wild apple plugs still hanging on from this year's planting. With no rain in the forecast, I expect they'll be dead soon.

FYI...University of Idaho tree plug ordering is now open for this fall and next spring.
I ordered 10 wild apple plugs to replace the ones that died this year. Also ordered 5 rugosa rose plugs. I usually plant 5-10 of those every year. I've yet to see them produce the large rose hips like they're supposed to do, but then again we've had drought for 3 years straight.

Easiest apple tree to plant and manage—simple.

I’m going to put in an order again. 10, maybe 15 . I might try a couple other trees as well. Their Bur Oak has been solid !
