I took a pic of the crazy growth of the Common Wild 🍎 in Iowa … Lots of growth there. How are you going to prune? Split the tube and then prune? Wire afterwards.

Last year I had 4 out of 5 apple plugs put on 5'+ of growth. This year, they all died. I hope next year isn't another drought year.

Last year's plugs (5 of them) did fine, I field grafted them to other varieties this spring. This year's plugs (10 of them) were all dead by August.

10-15 more in the cart .. order later today. The most simple fruit tree to plant (not suggesting it’s the best) but easy to maintain and nice growth on mine so far !
Drought resistant except for Stu situation. Literally no rain !🫤

While I did lose the 10 I planted last year, the 5 I planted the year before all survived last year's drought. It seems once they're established for a year or more, they're pretty tough. I'll be adding a bunch of watersorb to each planting hole this year. Now that I have a bunch of m111 rootstocks coming for grafting, I'm not 100% sure where the wild apple plugs are going to end up. I may up planting some in woods openings.

I found one I planted n a clearing (timber) in Minnesota. It was so tall I was shocked . No tube, or cage. I was surprised it made it ? I’ll get a pic in the fall. Maybe it will have fruit?🍎

My plugs from of U of ID just showed up. I'm not planting them today, it's too damn cold out there.
Yes, I've gotten soft

I couldn’t take it either. I grafted in my unheated shed, then picked up some brush from yesterday's saw work. The wind is brutal. I said screw it and came inside, gave myself a haircut and got warmed up in the shower. Looks a bit nicer next week, I'll get some more work done then

Is your plan to just let them grow as-is?

Is your plan to just let them grow as-is? I don't know what I'll do with them long term to be honest. If some look especially healthy/disease free/vigorous I may let grow as is, I imagine I'll graft the majority to something else at some point.

Last year I had 4 out of 5 apple plugs put on 5'+ of growth. This year, they all died. I hope next year isn't another drought year. I know a lot of people say not to use chips for apples because of voles but, I know they help with drought and less winter kill. I’m going to be mulching spruce, pine, oaks, chestnuts, persimmons and may try a few crabs. I’m still not going to mulch the main orchard trees.
