This is the apple tree on main street in Akeley, MN. Before the great habitat fire of QHMG, we were all watching this tree to see how long it'd hold onto it's ping pong ball sized apples. I'd say they're about all down now. If I get to it this year, this thing is getting grafted to some of my siberians. I didn't roll through Akeley until after midnight. So why not do something creepy like stop to take pictures of a tree at night while driving a truck with out of state plates?

There's some nice scions sitting there waiting to be clipped.

Easy grabbing...when I take scions from "public" places I just act like I'm supposed to be doing what I'm doing

"No officer, this is not my tree. Why am i doing this? Look at all those water sprouts, bad crotch angles, and branches touching. If this tree could move, it would hug me for what I'm doing. This is herbivoral abuse and I'm putting a stop to it. You should be investigating whoever owns this tree."

Tell them you're an arborist and orchard manager from SDSU doing research on northern hardy crabapples.

More akeley crab tree pics. I ate one. It’s a sweet flavor with a mild tart finish. All these are across the street from the gas station right on Hwy 34. The two I was watching didn’t produce shit this year. These are one building east. Not all were this soft already, but probly 20%.

The ones that are still holding like that, sure look like they could be Columbian? I have not a clue. You gotta ask the guys that have lived with crabs for decades.

This look like good bud wood to you? Never saw this post before, my bad. Yes, you have some decent scions there. The very tips of the branches backward until they fork should work for grafting.

They are LOADED this year. I have to have this. Grafting contest at the Stabbin’ Cabin this spring? You graft that this next spring and take care of them for a few years and by the time you're my age they'll be that big and producing heavy fruit loads.

Did you taste one and are the seeds turning black? Makes me wonder about people having grafting knives at a place called the Stabbin Cabin.
