Our MDHA chapter has a food plot program for members. We sell seed at a reasonable price(beans and corn), inspect the food plots to make sure they were not harvested before March 1 or so. Then we split $2000 between those participating. I donate my money back for a youth firearm drawing at the county fair. We usually get about $100 Back and I add a bit for the youth .22.

Back in the 70's when we had metal tags it was over thanksgiving. You could shoot a bear if one was still roaming around at that time as well. We only hunted over Thanksgiving in one year that I remember up in zone 1. The season was delayed because of extreme fire danger. Stu mentioned no change for quite a few years. This is true for zone 1 and the traditional zone 2. Sometime in the more recent past, zone 4 was eliminated and converted to part of zone 2. I believe parts of NW Minnesota also went from shotgun to rifle zone. No question that this put more pressure on the old zone 4. I understand how Kurt feels about this in more open country.

The metal tag that I saved is from 1974, i wish I still had the license and or a guide from that year to tell me the hunting seasons, but I don't. I do remember hunting over thanksgiving as a kid there. Maybe we were hunting illegal at this guys place? All the guys kids were hunting, and being by Talmoon MN, it would not surprise me! LOL Edit: I did find a Nov 9th 1974 newspaper article from up north talking about the forest fires. Do you think that may have been the year they held the season until thanksgiving because of the fires?
