Over the winter I picked up a pair of Italian double cut pruning shears. An orchardist from NY says they're the best thing since sliced bread for grafting. I was just fooling around with them on some hawthorn limbs. They are going to be about perfect for making matching cuts on scions and rootstocks.

Man, I'm falling even further behind on grafting plans this spring. Anybody cut extra scion this spring? I'd pay for shipping! I won't need much as I was banking on Ryan having Dolgo rootstock again. Looks like he's sold out, but I just emailed him to see.

Can you get red splendor seedling crabs from a SWCD? I guess there might be some scion laying on the ground where I have pruned, but deer have eaten most of it.

Still to early to graft so I did some more planting for my screen. I found a spot on state land with hundreds of spruce growing in the ditch. I transplanted 18 yesterday. I am going to do a truck load next weekend. If it is very, very wet, small trees, and no bud break, I have just pulled them and stuck them in the ground. Mainly spruce and white cedar. The spruce have been 8 inches or so in height.

The benefit of being in a ditch is there is a hard packed base of rocks a couple inches under the surface. They either pull right out by hand or you move to the next one. Most of them even hold a fair amount of soil to the roots when they come out. The process really couldn’t be any easier. Survival rate is probably 90%. Next week I am bringing a shovel and going to see if I can pop out some 3-4 footers.

Planted 11 crabs from Whitetail Crabs and SLN yesterday. Trees /roots looked real nice. Didn’t get any pics in the box. Have 37 in the ground now in the hills. I “think” I’m done. SLN: 2 winter wildlife 2 all-inter hangover Whitetail Crabs: 2 Droptine Wickson Sheepnose Winter gold 2 crossbow Here’s a few terrible pics. Put most along our mowed areas below the shed.

Planted 8 whitetail crabs today. What did you all get? I had a few mid-size trees. Great price on those. They still looked great I thought.
